NRL Players and family members in hot water

Sure, but what is that line? Banning them for life is simply stupid, won't stop or discourage people, and the PR we get from being out of touch with a widespread societal issue will be far more damaging than any PR we get from being "strong on drugs". Bank. On. It.

It's not exactly like that, though it is similar. These guys don't need to be wearing anything and they represent their club and NRL. It doesn't matter what time, day, part of this or any other country they are, they don't have an off switch until they retire, even then, they are "former NRL star..." Yes, that is part of the privilege of (mostly) earning good money and being famous and you do not have to choose that path if you don't want to. Having said that, people make mistakes, especially those that are famous and have everything tossed their way and are built up to think they are the best/invincible. I don't think someone should be punished FOR LIFE for a mistake. Nor do I think they should be thrown under the bus for a failed test. If they fail three times, sure - what difference does it make, 1 strike or 3 strikes? Mostly it just allows room to hang themselves while keeping a reasonable view on things.

Perhaps it's time for you to exit the game then Sterlo, there will always be players with drug issues and there will always be players that make mistakes. If you are wanting players to be perfect while disregarding what you guys got upto in your day (maybe he didn't take drugs, but you are out of your mind if you think players didn't take rec drugs in the 80's, or any other era), then i don't think what you are offering is realistic.

I bet you if you asked them on an anonymous questionnaire, they would answer very differently.

I'm not saying ban them for life, but yeah, punish them severely for fucking up. A two match ban is a slap on the wrist. Punish them financially and let them front the media to explain their actions. Make them apologise to not only the fans but their team mates who they have also let down. These players are educated quite a bit these days on this kind of stuff. They all know the rules, its literally drilled into them every year. Strict punishments need to be introduced and enforced. Not ifs, not buts, break the rules you get punished. The players are pushing for more money every time they get a new TV deal, this kind of actions effect that TV deal. They effect sponsorship of clubs. The NRL is a national brand. You step out line, you pay a heavy price. Even if it means eventually excluding you from the game all together if they continue to not get the message.

To be fair people ruin their lives with alcohol as well but it is legal.

Why can't we legalise drugs with the same restrictions upon its use as alcohol? If you drug and drive you lose your license and potentially go to jail. If you are drug and disorderly you get arrested. If you have drugs in your system when you are at work and get caught you are sacked.

So your okay to walk past people on the streets using ice right in front of you? Or are you just talking about dope?

You can't drink alcohol in most public places. Drugs would be regulated so they are safer to use. Not some pinga made by Joe Blow in his garage.

Let me know when they can successfully regulate someone taking ice

I don't have a problem with this, but make it reasonable from both ends. Realistically, a punishment should have multiple tiers each one increasing in severity, and yes ultimately there does need to be a "banned for 2 years" whatever punishment at the end.

But really, the focus should be on the rehab part. Not only does it look good from a code perspective "more interested in rehabbing the person than handing out punishments" but it helps the person which should be the first aim, not "protecting your brand".

Technically speaking they're the same right? They're illegal drugs therefore they must be banded together under the one umbrella? Otherwise you are at the precipice of making concessions based on certain drugs, and if you start doing that, well, welcome to the team lol.

There needs to be a line in the sand. Drugs are illegal. Its no different to being caught by the police. You are dragged up in front of a judge to explain yourself.

First time offenders don't get that.

This is such a complex argument. Most recreational drugs should probably be regulated like alcohol, with the same restrictions and punishments for abuse, as well as the same opportunities for help and support of addiction.

Some drugs however, are just too dangerous to ever be permissible, Ice and some other mind altering hallucinogens are right at the top.

It would also stop this outrage, as no one would bat an eyelid about a player legally purchasing pot, eccy or coke, like no one does when they drive past their local bottle-o.

I honestly could not care less that Procter and Bromwich bought drugs. Did they harm anyone?

I just don't buy into the whole "it's a mistake", **** that, it's not a mistake.

A mistake is when you **** up your homework or dial the wrong number

Rolling up a bank note and snorting cocaine after you have paid a random guy for it is deliberate, the biggest mistake they made was getting busted.

Well yeah, naturally. I dont think anyone believes that they were walking home to bed when they slipped in fell face first into a pile of coke with notes rolled up and embedded in it.

Whether or not they harmed anyone is irrelevant.

Cocaine is illegal. Full stop.

Whether or not you or anyone else thinks it should be legal is irrelevant. Part of living in a civilised society is excepting the rules and legalities of the society you live in, whether you like the rules or not.

That's not what he was meaning.

The claims that it was a mistake, like it was the first time they have done it and they were just lucky/unlucky enough to be caught on the first time.

That's rubbish.

If your drunk and you are snorting coke, you do coke. You would have to be pretty naive to think that these guys are on the piss and thought "hey Jesse, have you heard of this cocaine stuff? Let's give that a go. I wonder if that man has some?"

Todd Greenburg was asked at halftime in one of the Saturday matches "Do you have the power to direct ASADA to test these players immediately?" His response went along the lines of "We do have that power should we choose to use it".....and clearly they didn't.

Yep, and this annoys the **** out of me.

They won't do anything about it because they are big names. The thing that really ***** me off is that you can guarantee that if these were some u20's blokes whose career looked to be depth players at best, old slimeberg would make an example of them to show what the game means to him; but because they are big names he weasels out of it like a politician.

Maybe it's because they have a policy in place and the players concerned are on their first strike. They have to be consistent across the teams otherwise Melb and GC would blow up with a valid argument why their players were treated differently

Its entirely possible they were first time idiots and thats why they got caught, but even i dont think its particularly relevant how many times youve tried it - you get done so be it.

Its a mistake being caught, thats about it.

edit: irrelevant. Keep it in the religion thread.
