I don't remember him being medically retired. I thought he simply retired and basically forfeited his remaining owed salary with only whatever he gets paid in his off-field role at Souths being included in the cap for the remaining original contract duration.

Bennett wouldn't play him because Inglis required injections to get through games so GI retired. He didn't have to jump through the exact same hoops as Burgess, but Souths were still looking for an exemption which they received.

He didn't medically retire though. My understanding is he literally said okay I retire, and forfeited his entire contract. What was unusual about the Inglis situation is a player will very rarely walk away from 1M+, just ask Boyd. So there's plenty of conspiracies to be had for sure, but by the books, he walked away from his contract, Souths pay him nothing and the NRL agreed that if Souths pay him nothing, it won't count against the salary cap other than the money that was already paid up until the point of retirement.

Like I said, he didn't jump through the same hoops as Burgess, but he was effectively told he wasn't going to be selected until his shoulder was right and Souths moved him into another role when those type of incentives were being discouraged (ask Pascoe at Wests all about it).
So yeah not the same as Burgess, but still a "retirement".

Look for what it's worth, I agree, I don't believe anyone walks away from effectively 1.5M, whether Bennett played him or not, he was still getting paid that money. He said don't worry about the cash, then apparently got an off field role worth 600k, which the NRL (I think...) said has to be included in the cap.
I think the main difference between the Souths / Tigers is they asked the NRL first rather than agreeing behind closed doors Farah would get a definite job if he hint-hint/wink-wink took a lower salary. The Tigers did what every other club does anyway except they had it in writing, which was dumb.
I don't like the NRL anymore than most but if he did retire by the books, there's nothing wrong with him going back and playing again. Now if Gillett or Burgess sign somewhere, we've got a real drama to cover.

We don't know the exact terms behind his retirement, other than the jobs were in place before the NRL had signed off on them (reported April 19, 2019 - salary cap exemption granted in May 16 2019). We also know that Inglis couldn't play without painkilling injections and Bennett wasn't going to allow that to happen so the club was stuck in an impasse.
I don't think clubs should be able to pressure and bribe their players into early retirements all for the sake of some cap relief, especially when there's other alternatives on the table.
This is why nobody takes the salary cap seriously because the clubs are given far too much leeway.

there is probably nothing stopping a player from doing that (unless once medically retired they need to sign some form of contract to get their salary paid out in full, agreeing not to play professional sport again)
the problem would be for the club that had that players salary exempt from the salary cap based on a medical retirement.
Rule 86.
1. The Player, at the time of termination, was diagnosed as medically unfit to currently continue to train and play elite level contact sport and was medically unable to ever return to play elite level contact sport due to the current level of disability or the significant risk of further disabling injury as a result of playing elite level contract sport.
2. The Player, had no similar injury or medical condition to that area of the body that either has or could reasonably be predicted medically to lead to a degenerative condition of that area of the body prior to signing his last NRL contract or if the players contract was signed more than 24 months previous within the last 24 months unless an unrelated single event has resulted in rapid deterioration of this condition.
3. A single event that caused the injury could be identified.

Love your style. Exceptionally well priced too. If you like this you should try the Cardhu if you come across it. Very similar, but the Cardhu is a wee bit smoother. Also the McCallen is money well spent.
