NRL stars on verge of revolution

Cowboys to finally tie down Johnathan Thurston
Steve Ricketts From: The Daily Telegraph May 08, 2010 12:00AM

IN A major boost for the besieged NRL, Test halfback Johnathan Thurston is close to confirming he will reject offers from rugby union and stay with North Queensland Cowboys.

Cowboys CEO Peter Parr yesterday said he was not breaking out the champagne yet, but he believed Thurston would stay true to league.

"We have worked hard to keep him and I think we will get the result for the game and our supporters," Parr said.

"I'm sure he will stay. I think he will make an announcement in a few days or maybe a week.

In other words all other offers have been withdrawn after he hurt his shoulder and the other clubs and codes realised he was damaged goods and not worth the arm and a leg there where gunna fork out for him.

My memory is a little hazey on this but I seem to remember Andrew Johns' injuries played a part in why union didn't end up signing him... is that right?

Suspect it had more to do with his drug habit than injuries...

So you are claiming Union knew about his habit before he retired?

Everyone seemed to know. And it was covered up.

I think there was a bit of that in it + Joey mentions in his book that the ARU boss guy (forgot his name) - he made the call.

The boss man also thought there was a risk factor involved with Joey at the time... and I guess he was sort of right... they still would have got a good 2 seasons out of him and they would have had MASSIVE PR over it. I reckon if they had their time back they would have took him.
