Injuries Cruel Young Broncos
The NRMA Insurance Broncos under-20s have produced a courageous display before going down 48-40 in the National Youth Conference match in Canberra today.
The young Broncos played most of the half with just one player after the bench after game-ending injuries to fullback Paul Byrnes (shoulder), centre Jordan Drew and prop Lindsay Collins (both concussion).
Jack Tuttle had scored his second try of the match to get the Broncos 28-22 in front before the Raiders came roaring back with tries to Tevita Pangai, Lachlan Lewis and Brenko Lee.
The Raiders held on to a 40-34 lead with just 14 minutes remaining, but the young Broncos kept coming.
Half Jayden Nikorima zipped over and then kicked the conversion to tie the scores up at 40 each.
But sadly the injuries were always going to be costly.
It took a penalty to Canberra hooker Zac Woolford to break the 40-all deadlock with six minutes remaining.
The Broncos made a last-ditch effort break down the left-hand side with two minutes left but a loose pass inside turned over possession.
The Broncos would not lie down, holding up front rower Pangai in the final minute, but the Raiders finished off with try after a grubber bounced back off the posts into the hands of the five-eighth Lachlan Lewis on the siren.
The loss was a shame, after the Broncos had battled to a tight 24-22 lead at halftime before injuries started to take their toll.
The Bronco had an atrocious start, down 18-0 after just nine minutes, but started their first-half rally when Byrnes went over to make it 18-6.
But by the 28[SUP]th[/SUP] minute when Tuttle scored his first try, the Broncos had levelled the match at 18-all.
Big prop George Fai got the Broncos ahead 24-18 when he scored in the 35[SUP]th[/SUP] minute, but Raider Thomas Cronan scored to leave his side two points down at the break.
The loss drops the Broncos off the top of the National Youth Conference ladder after equal leaders Penrith beat the Eels last night.
