MAROONS coach Kevin Walters says Corey Oates is in the frame for Queensland selection as Broncos teammate Darius Boyd labelled the giant winger tailor-made for State of Origin.

Walters revealed Oates could be handed a shock debut for Origin I this season, despite his latest injury setback giving incumbent Dane Gagai breathing space in the battle for a Maroons wing spot.

Oates will miss the next four to six weeks with an AC joint injury, but his blockbusting form in the opening fortnight has convinced the Maroons hierarchy he is ready for Origin football.

While the 21-year-old is expected to be sidelined until late April, Oates would still have a full month of NRL upon his return to apply fresh pressure to Gagai.

With the youthful Knights doing Gagai no favours as they struggle under new coach Nathan Brown, Oates has rocketed into contention for Origin I at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on June 1.

Gagai is far from entrenched after one game for the Maroons last season and Walters likes the utility value offered by Oates, who at 106kg can slot into the back row.

“I’m keeping an eye on Corey and a lot of the emerging guys,” Walters said.

“Last year we saw Emerging Origin players go into the senior team and it will probably happen again this year. Some boys will get an opportunity at some stage throughout the series.

“I like the size ‘Oatesy’ brings and his carries. He is very good in that area, he continually gets good run metres. He relieves pressure on the forwards with some tough runs and he was doing that most of last season on the wing for the Broncos.

“He just needs to keep working hard on his game and have that attention to detail. He’s certainly got the ability to play Origin. Corey has been a part of the Emerging Origin team and if you are in that squad, you are on the radar.”

Oates amassed 342 metres and four line-breaks in the opening two rounds and Boyd believes his height and bulk would terrorise NSW opponents.

“These days everyone puts up bombs and kicks to the winger and he’s a tall guy — he’s one guy you want to stay away from,” said Boyd, who has played 23 Origin matches from the Queensland flank.

“If you do bomb to Corey, he comes in hard, he’s 106kg so no one wants to get in his way.

“Origin is so strong and tough that his play one and two carries would be really good in that arena and his decision-making in defence is getting better and better.

“He is close in my eyes (to Origin selection) but it’s up to Kevvie I guess.”

Slater is pretty much out for the season...Gagai would move to centres and Oates to wing?

i think oates is a must, as long as he comes back and gets a few games in after his shoulder injury and gets through ok.
with our ageing pack he will add that extra size and carry through the middle.
on a side note for the origin was anyone as concerned as me on how slow nate myles looked the last 2 weeks??

I agree. He is past his used by date. I would be legit staggered if he played Origin this year. There are a million props in the NRL who are ahead of him on form now.

Yeah agree, Myles looks sloppy, you've gotta have him in the team though. This would be my squad for Game 1, if it were picked today.

1. Boyd
2. Oates
3. Inglis
4. Chambers
5. Gagai
6. Thurston
7. Cronk
8. Scott
9. Smith (c)
10. McGuire
11. Guerra
12. Gillett
13. Parker

14. Lillyman
15. Myles
16. Thaiday
17. Papalii

I really hope not. Pick someone else please, Kevin.

No point making massive changes to a team that won their last game 52-6. They should really get 1st shot. As long as DCE is nowhere near that team I'm happy.

thats pretty dam solid, i do think though that inglis will play fullback and i think we will def need to have morgan on the bench for cover but im not sure who would miss out..

I really don't want Gagai near the team. Not that we're flush with options though.

Oates playing outside of Inglis would be awesome. Good call on the 4 forward bench. I think the interchange reduction will impact origin the most.

Inglis has to be fullback. He absolutely killed NSW each time he played there for QLD. They number on him too much in the centres.

As for Oates, with all the bans, I can't see him NOT getting picked if he's available. Munster and Holmes are banned for the year.

who are our centre options?
I think you can lock Chambers in. He made some really strong runs in RD2 but the one thing he kept doing was hogging the ball and drawing players to his winger.

Chambers was great in origin last year. Aside from injury, I can't see our backline being anything but:

1. Inglis
2. Boyd
3. Gagai
4. Chambers
5. Oates
6. Thurston
7. Cronk

If either of our halves get injured and with the bans, let's sure hope they don't, we still have Morgan and Mbye ahead of Daly Certainly-Everage.

Well he's certainly thereabouts in the pecking order with Milford and Holmes banned and Copley yet to show anything in 2016 or since 2014.

If Milford wasn't on the outer, I think:

1. Milford
2. Boyd
3. Inglis
4. Chambers
5. Gagai

Is a nice looking outside backline.

But I guess Oates' size would be a plus for the wear and tear in Origin.

Totally bummed about his AC though. That might take the physicality out of his game for a little while.

Oneil is the only other player that I think could come into contention. After that we start getting into Maranta and MacDonald

I wouldn't be against Morgan playing fullback.. It's not like he has never played there.

I don't think we need a utility.

I just really don't want Gagai at centre. I would rather have Nielson. He can tackle. Well, he can tackle better than Gagai.
