Ofahengaue Gets Selection Shock - Broncos
HIS parents found out first, but it was a thrilled Joe Ofahengaue who got the stunning news from one of his most respected teammates.
Ofahengaue was yesterday shocked to be named in the Queensland Emerging Origin squad, where will join a host of young Maroon hopefuls in camp in a fortnight.
And the surprise of making the squad was made even better for Ofahengaue when it was Queensland stalwart and Broncos' teammate Corey Parker who told him.
"It was a surprise at first," said Ofahengaue today.
"'Cozza' (Parker) came into the gym and congratulated me after training so I was pretty happy.
"Mum and Dad found out before me because they had put it on the website.
"But I was pretty stoked.
"I am really thankful for the opportunity and hopefully I can learn some stuff off the awesome players that will be there."
But one thing Ofahengaue is making sure of is that he does not take his stunning past 12 months for granted.
This time last year Ofahengaue was yet to make his NRL debut.
By the time he turned 20 in September he had cemented himself in the Broncos' top 17 and was about to play in an NRL grand final.
Now he has been shortlisted as a future Maroon.
"It has been really fast and I have been truly blessed," he said.
"I can't thank the club and Wayne (Bennett) enough for the opportunities they have given me this past year.
"I hope I can build on that during the 2016 season.
"Keeping humble is something I always want to do.
"I just want to stay humble and learn as much as I can off the older boys like Cozza, Sammy (Thaiday) and Blairy (Adam Blair)."
