Our weakness in 2009

Just want to make it clear I'm not pressing panic buttons yet or having a go.

Just worth nothing imo - Our weakness was shown last night. OBVIOUSLY we were flat all across the park - 3 weeks of excellence the writing was on the walls sooner or later, you can't be fire every week in the NRL anymore, that is a fact.

However, I think that match was a blueprint of how we might lose big games this year. Without being too captain obvious but lets face it, dog fights and forward battle games are going to be fifty fifty for us this year. With our backline the way it is, we need to win games by field position. As shown by last night, if all we are doing is carting it out of our 20, nothing is going to happen. Luckily we have Lockyer and Wallace who have excellent kicking games (bar last night) but how badly did we need some strong hit ups last night at certain points in the game?

Thaiday is a gun, our firepower forward no doubt, but he's not a civo type metre maker, he's a momentum livewire forward, I know Clinton has been in great form but Clinton and Kenny dont scream confidence in a dog fight semi final match (Getting way ahead I know) but its something to think about. Losing Hannant has obviously played an impact. I'm seriously worried everytime clinton hits it hard, that ball control is so iffy. I think we need one more no mucking around prop forward who is going to take some strong hit ups.

Thoughts?

Clintons ball control has been quite good this year i thought. I noticed he tends to drop the ball when he gets flat balls close to the line. I agree we lack a civo, webcke, or price but I think Kenny can be that player with a few more game sunder his belt. Also we needed another prop last night that was a key problem IMO.

Yep, lost one last night when he got one of those flat balls.

Thaiday is similar.

I think when the props get thos flat balls they are expecting to be decoys and they have no time to get a good grip on the ball. I am happy with the way Clinton and Kenny have been going this year thus far. Our bench let us down and we did look knackered.

Our bench lets us down because the selections are poor. Broncos need to get over this idea that you need someone on the bench as a reserve back. By all means, have a back rower who can fill in in the centres as a pinch, but forget having a specialist back on the bench.

Also wish they'd get over the reserve hooker idea.

Just have 4 forwards, 2 props and 2 back rowers.

Yes I mean the bench that was selected I have no doubt the players selected on the bench did there best.

If we are going to have no back up hooker on the bench who will be the hooker to play the 80?
Gorrell or McCullough?

What do you think of this idea
9. Glenn
14. McCullough/Gorrell
15. Setu
16. Sims
17. McGuire

Im not to sure how Glenn goes at hooker but if hes not to bad then just have him play the first 15-25mins at hooker then bring McCullough/Gorrell on and move Glenn into the back row and have McCullough/Gorrell play the rest of the game at hooker. This is just a idea that i came up with then so give me your thoughts. Doing this it will add much more muscle and size to our bench.

McCullough needs to be able to play 80 minutes. All hookers should be able to.

2 hookers on the bench isn't bad IMO, provided the rest of the players are all forwards. They (the hookers) just have to try do more defensive work to make for it.

Still I like the idea of having either McCullough or Gorrell as the main hooker and Alex Glenn as the utility who can play in the centres or a bit of hooker if needed. This would allow us to have both Sims and McGuire on the bench.

I've never really liked the idea of playing two hookers in the team. I would much rather have four forwards on it, or atleast having someone like Glenn on the bench as utility who can cover forwards, backs and hooker if needed.

I would like to see;

14. Glenn
15. Setu
16. Taylor
17. Sims/McGuire.

Personally, i would drop Gorrell from the side altogether, have Glenn on the bench as our utility player (covering: backrow, center and hooker - if McCullough needs a spell) and start McCullough. so our bench would look something like:

14. Glenn
15. Taylor
16. Setu
17. Sims/McGuire

more ballanced bench IMO

I like the thought of having Sims as a starting second rower with Setu on the bench or vice versa.

8. Kenny
9. McCullough
10. Clinton
11. Thaiday
12. Setu/Sims
13. Parker

14. Glenn
15. Taylor
16 Sims/Setu
17. McGuire

I love the fact that all the big men on the bench can play in the front and back row while Glenn just plays as a backrower/utility. Like others here I'm not the biggest T'eo fan.

Had our bench been stronger I think we could have played a bit better however I'm not sure that could have won us the game. Bennett obviously knew how to shut our forwards down and as such the dragons pack pretty much smothered us for most of the game, add the very poor kicking game from our guys and they were able to beat us very convincingly.

Definitely agree with the four forward bench. Not a fan of having an outside back there. A backrower can always cover a backline position if he has to.

EVERY DECOR RUNNER IS ALWAYS TOLD TO HAVE THEIR HANDS IN POSITION AND TO EXPECT THE BALL. THAT IS DRUMMED INTO KIDS AT 12 YEARS OF AGE.THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR DROPPING THE FLAT BALLS... IF IT IS NOT POOR TECHNIQUE/LAZINESS, FEAR AND LACK OF CONFIDENCE TEND TO CAUSE DROPPED BALLS.

Sorry about the caps guys, my son has been on the computer.
