Well that's one team we don't have to worry about for next year.....anyone asked Peter Wallace what he thinks...pass the popcorn

While I think he was useless here, I think under the guidance of Gould, he will probably shine for them.

I still wonder how he would have been remembered here had he jagged Milford for 2014. Very happy for him TBH, wish him well.

We're talking about a bloke who played Hoffman at 5/8 and kept Hunt on the bench when he was ready to start as a half. The Panthers are done next year unless Gould is the actual coach and Griffin a figurehead.

I'm happy for Hook.

The NRL has granted so many ordinary coaches second, third and even forth chances that I think Hook deserved a chance to learn from his mistakes and start fresh at a new organisation. If I was a betting man, I'd bet against the Panthers and their chances but I'll be interested to see how he goes and genuinely wishing him all the best.

At the Broncos, he was always in a precarious situation. He took over right as an era was about to end. In that situation, there isn't time to really build towards a future, you've just got to go for it and the Broncos gave it their best shot, enjoying their best regular season since 2000 and looking like a premiership force until Lockyer suffered his fractured eye socket. I wouldn't go as far to say that injury alone cost the Broncos the premiership, I believe Manly were always going to give the Broncos a run for their money regardless, but it certainly denied them an opportunity.

His biggest problem for mine was that he was too loyal to that squad. While he wasn't alone, a better coach would have seen the writing on the wall and made the necessary changes to make the Broncos competitive in 2013 and beyond. Unfortunately, Hook barely entered the market, deciding only to bring back former players who had seen better days (Scott Prince, David Stagg, Denan Kemp) and it turned the entire season into a bust.

From that point on, the Broncos were always playing catch up, throwing money at whatever available talent they could find without much rhyme or reason. When they did stumble on a winner in Milford, they went over and beyond, without an appropriate plan B, C or D if Milford wasn't available in 2014. A lot of people complain about Hoffman at 6 and how it took Hook 20 rounds to rectify the issue, but the reality is none of those options were right. Neither Hodges, Kahu, Barba, Nikorima, Paia'Aua, Strasser or Taylor should have been the Broncos 6 in 2014, they needed somebody else during the pre-season to form a combination with Hunt and get the job done.

It was a bitter pill to swallow, but the Broncos had their solution in Anthony Milford. Whether Hook would have been successful remains to be seen. Personally, I have my doubts whether a Broncos squad containing Barba, Hoffman and Milford (minus Blair, Boyd, Oates on the wing) would have been as successful but I'm sure they would have improved on 2014.

Regardless, his stint in Penrith will be interesting and may confirm a few theories fans had about him.

Good luck to Hook. Having Gus behind him will probably help him in his weaker facets, and hopefully limit the bulk program...
On the other hand, Griffin is likely to be better at keeping the youth and big heads under control than Cleary.

Of course, it will be most interesting to see how Wallace deals with being under the guy that screwed him in the first place, and quite curious whether there is any truth to the Soward being shopped rumour, or whether Pete will be the one put on the market...

Wouldn't it be funny if WB decided to bring Wallace back into the fold as backup to Ben Hunt?
3, 2, 1... Mr. Fourex head exploding.

The Fourex meltdown would be incredible

(No offence Fourex, but you know, it would be hilarious)

He's going to have a meltdown just at the thought of that one!

When he retires we should hire him as our halves coach.

OMG... what have I started? :laugh:

Well, at least Wallace would be able to kick a field goal from 20 out..

He could teach Hunt a thing or two about how to do it properly.

I would be all for it as long as he brings Soward with him .

Was Griffin that bad?

I've been wanting to do this for a while and the recent events has finally made me do it.

I'm going to do my own alysis of each Anthony Griffin season and see how bad he really was as a coach. I'm starting with 2014 as it's the easiest one for me to do

All of the season reviews are just solely coming of memory and a bit of research so I could be wrong on some points and I welcome corrections.

2014, Finished 8th beaten in week 1 of the finals, Points for; 549 (4th), Points against; 456 (7th)

Season Summary;

The Broncos rebounded from the worst season in the club's history to qualify for the finals in 8th spot on a points difference of 13+ thanks to some results that swung our way in the last week. 8 wins on the back of a 4 game winning streak had Brisbane sitting in 6th spot before 5 loses in the next 6 games threatened to see the Broncos out of the finals but wins against Newcastle and the Dragons pinched the Broncos a spot in the 8 but it wasn't ensured till Penrith saw of the Warriors in the last home and away game of the season. Brisbane's season came to an end the same way in 2012 with a 32-20 defeat in Townsville against the Cowboys.

Positives;

Ben Hunt played so well after finally being given the halfback spot permanently 2014 turned into his breakout year, he poled highly in the Dally M voting, made his test debut and was very unlucky not to play for Queensland. Dale Copley played the best football of his career finishing as the teams top try scorer with 16 after missing the previous year with injury and also entered rep calculations. Daniel Vidot had a strong season and surprised everyone.

Negatives;

The mess in the five-eighth position continued as Hoffman played 18 games there before being shifted to fullback where he was solid, Barba was shifted after catting it at fullback and played there for the rest of the year and played his best footy for us there. We might've finished higher if this happened earlier in the year. Jake Granville continued to play second fiddle to McCullogh and only played 8 games before moving to the Cowboys were he fulfilled his potential. Griffin denied him opportunities here and Granville was always someone who i've had time for and deserved to play more here.

Recruitment;

Ben Barba and Martin Kennedy were signed on big money and both played poorly with Kennedy being the worst of the lot making no impact and was a huge waste of time but I never had any time for him and always thought he was hopeless. Barba bombed badly but found some touch at the back end of the year but was a pretty much a bust and never came close to his 2012 form. Daniel Vidot though paid off as he was one of our best in 2014 and had a strong all round season. Stewart Mills, Todd Lowrie, Zach Strasser, Darren Nichols and Marmin Barba was the rest of a disappointing recruitment drive that didn't deliver.

Verdict;

Rebounding from 12th the previous year and making the finals is an achievement so i'll give him credit. Scoring the 4th most points is pretty good for a team that came 8th. 2 of the big signings that the team was going to be built around bombed so that took a lot of shine of the recruitment drive as apart from Vidot none of them really kicked on despite Lowrie playing 18 games. He could've handled the halves and Granville situation a lot better as well, but I thought he did a decent job last year all things considered. I'll give his 2014 year a 5/10

Good luck to him but it's the Panthers who will need the luck unless he has learned from all his mistakes. I couldn't wait for him him to go. His style of turning everyone into a second rower was ultra boring and never going to win a comp. How the **** we finished 4th in points scored is amazing.

His blindness to Hoffmans shortcomings at 5/8 and inability to make hard calls on out of form players was loyalty to an extreme and to the detriment of our side. Throw in the bulk up (slow down) program along with his recruiting and his time here as coach was the longest 3 years as a Broncos supporter.

He did however nominate 2015 onward as our premiership window. This may have been him buying time but nevertheless he did call it.
