OFFICIAL Patrick Carrigan re-signs

Regardless of all the chat I do hope we keep Patty. If the figure is true it’s not a huge overspend so if he doesn’t live up the the price tag it should only be about 200k too much over 2 years. Not exactly crippling the club. He could very well reach that level or above though.

Most of my concern is around extending Cobbo before next November.
We will keep him if we can start focusing on it now… we get a 100 cracks at it before he ***** off

Yep ... and those 100 cracks will be even more potent if the boys really start to play to their potential next season, the results start coming and we become a feared outfit again. The fans start returning in numbers and the Cauldron starts to bubble again ... if and when these things come around (and there's no reason they shouldn't) these young blokes will have become a unit and thoughts of joining Flipper and his mates up the coast will become pale in comparison.

I can't see Cobbo going anywhere based on his living out his childhood dream of playing for the Broncos but if he's held back from a position he's ready for the dolphins could offer him that starting position so I think he'd only go elsewhere for opportunity.
Extending him should be a priority as finding a like for like replacement may not come about for 10 years where as a Carrigan type player comes about more frequently

500k for Carrigan is comfortable overs, and reeks of the club rushing to cut the Dolphins off before they make a habit out of poaching our players.

I don't think you have watched NRL champion. Our joint best player in 2020 and we were getting railed every week, plus he had the added pressure of captain for most the season. Last season he was nowhere near as bad as everyone is complaining about. Put him at front row and he is well worth his weight in gold
I dunno about that, eh?

The price of gold is USD $59,350 a kilo at the moment. Pat weighs 106kg according to Google.

US dollar is at $1.38 AUD so doing my sums that‘s AUD$8.69m…

Is anyone here besides Wolfie, going to choose Pat Carrigan over $8.69m? 😂

THE Dolphins are some trouble if they don't get some players soon. Their leverage gets less and less with every player they target that doesn't sign with them, meaning they'll have to pay more for lower quality. I have read they're playing "hardball/not paying overs", which sounds good in practice but everyone knows they have a spare 10 million in their cap so they expect more....

I am all for sticking it to the Dolphins every chance we can.
Take that Wayne you curmudgeony old prick.

Not paying overs is good business. If they start paying stupid amounts for players, they will turn into the Titans. Having Wayne is a good bargaining chip, but I'd hope he isn't too involved in who they target, his recruitment has been pretty shit the last 10 years or so.

I like the 2 years as well, given we want to move him on at all it's not a massive amount that we are putting in.
With the Lodge contract aren't we apparently paying around 400k for the next couple years for him to be at another club. I would rather be paying Pat 800k then that bullshit deal.

what has anyone at the club said that suggests we want to move Carrigan on

In 2019, patty turned down a 1 mil over 3 year offer from the dogs. That would make me think he is on 250-300k this year.

As others have suggested the reported "up to 1 mil" contract extension would probably offset the total salary of the next two years by upgrading this year, perhaps putting him at about 400k give or take for the next few years.

Of course paying overs is bad business.. but they have 30 spots to fill, 1 year to sign them and every single player manager in the nrl KNOWS they have $10 million to spend. They need to jag a few marquee players before they start playing "good business" games, everyone knows what cards they have to play. They'll be paying overwhelming for marquees or they'll be paying overs for mod-range players the 1st few years, the choice is theirs. You can't say to a players now "we will only pay you what your worth to us" knows they have $10 million to spend

Horrible way to look at it. You think because they have a full cap to spend, they should just spend stupidly to get a big name?

Every club has 10m to spend, not just Redcliffe.

the difference being that every other club can at least claim to have limited free space under their cap ... the Dolphins can't.

Signing Bennett was a good move as it gives them instant credibility ... but that will only last so long, they also need to land a BIG fish

They have to spend over 85% (or thereabouts). You expect them to play with a qld cup team? And you expect players to sign for them for unders before they sign anyone or have a team? They have 1 year to sign 30 players, if they try to "play smart" before they have a few marquees to draw in other players they will end up with a shocking squad and then start very poorly, this could take far longer to right then paying Munster, ponga or grant 200,000 extra

Hopefully they target Grant and Munster hard. Would love to see Melbourne cop the grunt of the new team.

Do you really think a player agent takes the clubs salary cap into consideration?

"Oh yeah I was gonna get you more money, but they said the cap is a bit tight so I just stopped negotiating"

I'm not saying they don't need a big fish, all clubs need at least one. I'm saying they shouldn't go over-paying for these guys if they want to be a legitimate title threat in the near future.

Where did I say they should sign people for unders, or play with a QC side? I simply stated spending money for the sake of it is poor business, which really should be common sense, but apparently not.
