Same money + R360 leave clauses I can understand tbh.

Even if I think it'll never happen, if he has someone telling him it will and its generational wealth on offer (not that 1.2m a year isnt already crazy), he would want to keep that door open.

If Souths allowed that option to remain open and we wouldn't, then yeah, especially with him being from NSW, I can see him going on the same money.

It's not registered until the end of the 10 business days, and a club can't announce it until the end of the 10 days.

Which is why Souths say they are respecting the rules and can't announce it. Thus, the wording of contract lodged- not Payne is a Rabbitoh.
 
Honestly think this is going to backfire on South's big time, that a massive chunk of their Cap in a Forward, yes arguably the best front rower the modern era has seen so far, but still as the Grand Final showed us, it wasn't Payne that won us the Game, we still win even if he doesn't play.

He'll be joining a Team with the likes of:
A fullback who's too small, all the guts in the World wont stop Players running right over him.
Wighton at 4 who's past it and Super League bound.
Mitchell at 5 who would rather be napping at 1 when he's not Injured OR Suspended.
Cody Walker at 6 in his last year before Retirement. (replaced by who?)
7: Literally who?
Brando Smith at 9, a degenerate gambler with white line fever (not the footy field ones either).
A Forward pack with the likes of Arrow and Fifita.
A has-been and a never-was.

Yeah, sure is a great idea to go drop all that cash on another Forward, just what that Team needs.
 
I think it comes down to not being the alpha male anymore.

He WAS indispensable- not not as much with players stepping up left right and centre

We NEEDED him before and will definitely miss him, but I like the balance it will bring with less reliance on him and more coin for Willison, a second rower and leaving more for our growing stars

Every premiership team loses a number of players to other teams

We may only lose one - not withstanding a couple of retirements coming this and next year

Stay positive - it could end up being a good thing without losing too many stars

Wayne doesn't mind a relaxed approach when it comes to his superstar players... I'm super interested to see how souths go this year where being fit as **** is the new meta.

I'd imagine he has clauses all through his contract.

The 1yr deal from broncos was probably the only year that was fully guaranteed... and everything they were trying to sort out beyond that potentially had clauses around it when you consider R360 and the new CBA that's coming.

I would also imagine that this next 3yr contract is the last of his maximum earning capacity i.e. 2027-29

He could very well keep playing until he's 33-35 or something, but he'll be 30 by the end of 2029... his godly fitness at his size means that he'll be able to offer something as a prop for a long time post 30, but there will be a downturn coming at some point.

Lolo was a high impact late footwork middle that was able to play 80mins when he signed his 10yr deal... there's still 2yr left on that and whilst he's still a solid 40mins prop, he's definitely not worth $1m.

I'd imagine Haas and his management are keeping his options as wide open as possible for earning capacity over these next contracts.

Souths will be paying out their ass if they end up keeping him all the way through to 2029

Wayne put the broom through his staff at the end of the season. Theobald comes from the Dragons and is head of performance and Bocking comes from Panthers.

Elkin and the rehab physio are out.

I imagine for him to be telling players and staff this morning, that the period ends tomorrow.

Which would have it signed on the 28th.
 
So if the player can waive the 10 day cooling off period, seems odd that he hasn’t just waived it?
If it is the R360 clause, you just put it in. The likelihood that R360 even gets up imo is minimal. It’s a risk you take on a player like Payne.

For me, it just doesn’t add up. Had it been the phins or titans I could probably make more sense of it meaning that he wouldn’t have had to make many personal changes i.e uprooting and moving etc. I don’t by the ‘I need a change’ there 100% has to be more to this story. And the fact we have a 10 day cooling off period may mean that he is just leaving that door ajar.
The timing too is just crazy. Season launch tomorrow and leave for England tomorrow night..
