OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

Having read that I care even less about him going, I will say though it is a bit hard to swallow this great bond he has with Wayne and how much more important that is than the club that has stood by him through a lot, has done everything it can to make him happy and has given him a premiership and that as soon as that box is ticked it's like "Cya!"

Any issues with Madge and the hard training? - None, no-one trains harder than Payne and he thrives on being uncomfortable. He changed to Samoa because Australia were always going to win so wanted the challenge, hinted there is similar reasons to his Souths move

Issues with Payne and the playing group/staff? - None, loves the club, loves Brisbane, his team-mates and Brisbane is his home. He hasn't ruled out returning

Brisbane low-balled him? - Nope and it isn't about money, no amount of money would have changed his decision

He wants to be coached by Wayne Bennett due to their bond over many things and a large part over disability (Payne's brother and Wayne's son). Feels that this is his last chance to be coached by Wayne.

Will not be backflipping.
thanks for the rundown.

What's the halves pairing for Souths shaping up like for 2027?

Jye Gray is good but not a top tier FB yet.

Little bit of salt here but I'd be placing a small wager on seeing Haas inside the boxing ring at some point in the next 5 years.

Good, we can finally move on now and wish him nothing but the best on and off field for 2026 and nothing but disappointment on the field thereafter. Hope everything off field goes from strength to strength.

But he and the manager can say what they want and of course Wayne always wants it to be about Wayne but nothing will convince me that this is about anything other than money and get out clauses.

We have a very nice chunk of salary cap now though and 12 months to look for the best options for us and that isn't a bad situation to be in. It will absolute suck to see him in another jersey, especially that awful South Sydney one but once he's wearing it, I hope we and everyone else belts him and they end up with a broken down version of what we've enjoyed.

Tell you what though, I really fear for Souths once Bennett goes...I fear for them while he's there. He pretty constantly ends up leaving his clubs in a pretty bad state when he leaves.

I don't fear for Souths at all. They will suck hard once Bennett goes and we can sit back and enjoy it.

It's not about get out clauses. Brisbane were happy to sign a one year deal. He wasn't going to be locked into anything.

Yeah that's the point, it is about get-out clauses. We wouldn't do it and the Souths deal means he has essentially signed a one year deal with the security of 3 years if it all goes to shit.

Yep and we aren't a desperate club anymore, Souths are. I get it, we were in this spot not so long ago, desperate to get anyone to sign/stay with us and being collectively over the moon when we picked up plodders the likes of Croft, Lodge, TPJ, etc. We also overpaid average blokes a lot (Glenn) and guys already on a steep decline (Boyd) long term big money offers.

South have had to upgrade Gray, re-signed a steeply declining Walker and constantly try to appease a lazy dude in Mitchell because they are desperate to have and retain big names. They've overspent on Fifita and now have thrown the kitchen sink at Haas.

Haas is an amazing pick up but given he is a notoriously professional trainer, is he even going to gel with the lazy blokes in Mitchell, Wighton and Fifita?

I can't wait to see how it all plays out, particularly given their coach has looked well past it for some time now. Do they all have one last dance in them? Can they have even one season of promise before it goes to pot?

Time will tell but whatever the case, it will be fascinating to watch when it all inevitably implodes on itself once Haas leaves for whatever the next best money making opportunity comes around 6-12 months into this highly touted contract.

I think it's a bit odd tying your career to someone who will be retired before you are, but I guess there's some history there so maybe it's just a case of scratching the itch.

Nothing we could do.

It’s so funny Mr Merhi (his manager) is coming out to debunk the rumours that he started. Typical of him

It's to save Payne from the fallout.

The giveaway was them agreeing to the 1 year deal & then not signing it. It was to put the Broncos off on what was going to happen.
