OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

people saying hes a mercenary, just about the money would all leave their shitty jobs they've got now for and extra few bucks an hour.... hes been our best player for 8 years, never once not put in.

this is a massive **** up by the club

I think this is simply a player getting a better deal elsewhere so he's taking it. Not sure its the clubs fault.

not fussed. it be a loss ? yes to some extend but just remember the real dominent clubs who have won the comp over the last few years have any of them paid over 1 mill for a prop?

we won it last year with the help of hass yes. but lets be honest it was mainly the reece walsh show.
if we didnt have hass and had another decent forward instead who is to say we would not of replicated the same result?

Only thing i will fear is the culture change. hass was a big part of the culture change imo. i hope the guys remaining can lift and keep the standards. Which might be double as hard if Hunt and Reyno all leave together.

All off contract forwards wouldn't even make our bench unfortunately.
Bide our time for 2027 or beyond
Patience is key. We are a destination club and will no doubt have many players asking their managers to give Madge a call.

Imagine how Tino is feeling right now after making his announcement a week ago

I see his mates Latrell Mitchell and David Fifita were involved in luring him there, maybe he can be a proper role model for them and his hard work ethic rubs off on them.
lol, I doubt it.

Someone said on reddit that 'Haas will bend the line while Latrell and Fifita are having a breather in backplay'

I laughed out loud

Seems like Bennett is bitter to me tbh. Our premiership would have definitely rubbed him the wrong way and he probably threw the kitchen sink at haas to get this “victory” over us.

He’s probably patting himself on the back at this very moment telling himself he won after all.

At the end of the day, it gives us the money to keep walsh, ezra, willison, carrigan and probably shibasaki and karapani etc too.

the GF proved that we don't rely on Payne like we used to. He was pretty quite in the GF and the others all lifted.

Good luck to him. With his money, likely Reynold's and probably Ben Hunt's as well, we'll have a fair old "war chest" as the media like to call it.

Use that money to find a rep quality prop and a rep quality second rower added to the squad we have, we'll barely miss Haas...

He has always flirted with being back in sydney. Must be a preference to live in sydney for some reason. No ****ing idea why. Maybe his family situation has changed.

He has always lobbied hard to get as much cash as possible. Dont blame him. He obviously does alot for his family and needs as much as possible. Maybe the offer is enormous. Souths have plenty of money. The roster isnt good enough but I suppose it is a start. The old guys are all a year older next year with plenty of tread on the tyres. He has won a premiership and ticked that box so maybe its not about that anymore for him.

It's bennet desperately trying to buy a comp before he retires/dies. All the talk of him being the best coach are surely fading now that he hasn't delivered a comp in 15 years

It's Bennett's job to do the best he can for his club. If he can get one over on the Broncs, great. I'm sure that's the icing on the cake. But if that is his motivation, then it ain't going to matter who he signs.

Meanwhile, we have got a LOT of freed up cap space and a year to replace him. We'll be fine.

the massive **** up for the club would have been increasing his offer over the $1.2 million a year because they panicked. they've done the smart thing here

The irony in opposition fans saying we are having "copium" after we have just won a premiership lol. They dont even realise the irony that they are coping with years of success in the future for us with walsh and mam plus millions in salary cap space vs their duds..

I will happily bet a few grand with them that we win 2-3 premierships before they even get a tiny sniff... any takers flops?

We've lost the only player we probably really wanted to keep that was off contract this year.. plenty of off contract players in 2027 that we can now extend pretty easily. We need to find more props for sure but we will be ok. Willson is a must extend but we need to find him some good support and some depth for 2027.

Taking my Carrigan glasses off and talking objectively, losing Pat would have a bigger impact than losing Payne will because he's the glue of the club. When you read Reyno's book you clearly pick up on it.

I agree with you, if we recruit well we could come out of this with a more balanced squad as we wont be so reliant on 2 forwards.
I think he will be a big loss. He is the best prop in the game. Hasn't even peaked yet.

However, I think we are better placed to deal with it than we were a few years ago. It's annoying it happened now when some other replacements are now off the market. Not sure there are any good replacements off contract.

But good luck to him. I don't begrudge him taking the money. It will give souths a very stacked pack.

For those saying to try and get Flegs back, I agree in theory because I am one of his biggest fans ... but there are some obstacles in addition to how he returns from the injury that has kept him out for the last two years.

firstly he isn't available until the 2028 season

secondly, he would need to take a pay cut because as much as i rate him, he isn't worth the 900k a season he is on at the Phins (figure from zero tackle)
Agree. Loved him before, he is a massive injury risk at the money he wants. As well as being a penalty magnet. Love Flegs at 500K. No more.
We have Te Kura too

It's hard to comprehend why he would leave now, we just won the comp.

Does he enjoy being the best player in a shit team? He's not that here anymore. He will be at Souths though. They've got some rep players but hardly anyone you can build a team around. Fifita's proven to be a hack. Latrell spends too much time on the sidelines, Cam Murray is an honest toiler. Cody Walker has to be thinking about hanging them up.

What's the go?

Im quite disappointed that hes leaving but you dont pay huge money to a prop. No matter how good, props won't win you the game with some good runs and good tackling. Look at Storm for example its always been the big 3/4 all spine players. Now we have 1.Walsh 6.Mam 7.Pezet 9.Mozer 14. Walters what an amazing spine.

I agree. He has been great every time he has played even at our lowest. It's sad we lose him for the peak years if his career. However, I think the club has done all they can and he has just chosen an alternate offer. Good for him.
