OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

Do we see the club going all out and trying to get him to stay before the cooling off period closes?
I get the feeling the club knew zero of this and his management outsmarted us. No leaks anywhere. I say it completely caught the club off guard. Seems like such an odd decision. Brissy is cheaper, his mates are here, he is settled (well, so we thought..) the club is a serious chance of continuing on the growth that we saw last year.
Imagine the $$ he would have earnt from life after footy in Brisbane too. Something just isn’t adding up. We aren’t going to find all the ins-and-outs but something tells me there is more in this story.
To think the club has their launch day tomorrow, and the team fly out to England, just adds more questions then answers at this stage imo.

Surely it's around this figure or more. If he's on $1.2m ish here, he's going to need $1.5m plus to make it worthwhile when you factor in how ****ing shit it will be for him to live in Sydney. If his family moves in with him, he's going to need to drop $3m + for a complete dump like this in Matraville.

Maximus and Co to chip in 3rd party for a nice pad on the harbour ?

No matter how I'm feeling right now, the version of Haas we saw from 23'-25' was the greatest 3 year stretch we have ever see from a prop in the NRL.

The memory of seeing him charging down Nathan Cleary in last year's prelim is forever etched as legend.

The Club have the right tools to set ourselves up to dominate for the next 5-10 years. Getting into a bidding war for Haas just for sentimental reasons does us a disservice.

Let's go out on a high Payne and go back to back.

you'll be waiting as long time if you try to replace Haas with another Hass-like player. I can only think of two in the game. we already have one, the Sharks have the other.

what you can do is balance your squad with the 1.2 million losing Haas frees up.

move our Haas-like player into a starting role, get your self a quality bench player and strengthen the depth in our weakest position.

while Haas will obviously be a big loss, it won't leave us in a much worse position overall

His 1 % ers will be missed .
But it`s next season . So Madge has time to find ways to take up that slack .

Timing is absolutely atrocious. But to be fair, there is no more good time to announce it anymore. It’s going to be worse if they announce it once the season has started in a few weeks. So let’s get it over and done with and rip the band aid off and not talk about it once the season starts.

He's 100% peaked. His body is starting to show the wear and tear of how much work he does on the field. I'm guessing he will become more and more likely to miss games over the remainder of his career.
Yeah I think I agree with this. The props peaking mid twenty’s notion may well be true.
but this bloke has had one of the highest workloads in the game since he was 19.
He’s played plenty of rep and hardly missed any time in that span.
I don’t think it will be quite a JT fall off, but the decline may come quicker than some think.

I gave up on caring about Payne when he threatened to walk from the club midseason in 2023.

Seeing how half of South's roster is constantly on the injury list, he'll either be carrying them on his back even more so than he does with us or he'll be on the sidelines.

By taking what is likely a very big contract, what Payne hasn't realised, (or simply doesn't care) is that he is limiting the talent that can be put around him.

here are the simple facts. Payne has been a regular for 7 years (i'm not counting his debut year of 2018 in these calculations since he played about 30 mins of footy over 3 games)

in those 7 years he made the finals just 3 times (and one of those times resulted in a record 58-0 loss).

Disappointing, obviously, but not at all unexpected. The only surprising part is its Souffs. I fully expected Union to throw the chequebook at him.

Welp, all the more reason to go for broke for the back2back now.

Back problems this year .
That could be the start of his decline . Backs rarely get better .
