OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

Yea its more the initial emotional response, i wont care too much this time tomorrow. Already seeing a fistfull of benefits from this after reading some of these posts in here.
Huge war chest with Haas Hunt and Reyno off the books, could literally afford any two top tier players on that gold.

The media is hilarious though, Woodsy already calling Souths premiership favorites for 2027.
I respect that.

I think we have the worst media going around. Such a low bar to get a media gig. It's all tabloid. Very few good journos writing insightful rugby league articles. In the other sports I like there are some great journalistic content. In RL it's gossip and scandal. If I ran New Idea I would recruit league journos. It's the same business

I was totally side swiped by the news, never saw it coming .. and Souths ??? ... I'm happy for him, gives us a chance to really blood some of the younger guys and we now have a crapload of cash at the end of 2026. He's been great and done everything he could for us, I just hope he realises what a shitshow he's moving into. Just give us one more heroic season to remember you by big fella.

haas decided to leave after Tino and all the other good props are locked up… We could’ve made a deal with Souths to get Keaon
Not sure I really want Keaon... he's a workhorse, but didn't necessarily have the explosiveness.

Someone like Naufahu Whyte is who you'd want as a young prop coming through... rorters have a few young guys and they can't fit them all in.

I know they just locked Whyte in, but they've got other young guys.

Could monitor how Pahulu goes down at storm... we've also got BTK, Francis and other young guys who now know there's no Payne Haas sitting in front of them.

Way more composed than me mate, im cursing his existence right now. Dude could have gone down as one of the greatest Broncos to play the game, one of the most incredible one club legends of all time.
But nah, wants to join Fatrell and Fifita.
Maybe his POS Mother's legal bill is a consideration. That would be running into some big numbers.

Read on socials that Souffs offered a let’s call it ‘r360 clause’ that allows Payne to leave if it does get off the ground. And we wouldn’t l allow the clause. There’s a minimal chance it does get off the ground and if so it means we wouldn’t be lining up against him in different colours. Makes it a bit of an unknown for you salary cap but probably a calculated risk worth taking.

Very weird wording.

Is he trying to get more from Brissy and they’re calling his bluff)

Rarely see an announcement basically saying he’s signed…probably but will know one way or the other in 10 days.

Whatever he does, it is what it is, as sad as it is, he was a big reason we broke the drought, so thanks to him for that.

Having Willison softens the blow somewhat but no one is Haas, would have liked him to go down a Broncos legend from start to end but whatever the case, he’ll always be a legend for us once the dust settles.

I am surprised it’s Souths though, they have a lot of inflated contracts as it is but maybe Payne just really likes being a one man team.

Maybe it isn’t the Broncs he loves, maybe it’s mediocrity. Will absolutely seeing him and Fifita together again particularly in possibly the bog ugliest jersey in sport.

I think he's signed with Souths to extract the same clause out of us and will bail on them during cooling off if we buckle to the clause.

No other explanation for him to not waive the cooling off period with Souths

Haas gets a longer-term deal on an equal, if not higher rate than the Broncos were willing to offer, and gets to go back to Sydney, which he's always wanted to. He won us a premiership and stuck with us through the spoon era to lead us to 2x grand finals. Zero bad words to say about him, all the best to him.

Broncos didn't buckle to the pressure from his management to up his fee and/or extend the length of the contract. We also milked the absolute **** out of Haas' prime years and played him a million minutes. By the time he gets to Souths he'll be 27 years old, the same age that Taumalolo was when he broke down. And in terms of actual Rugby League miles on his body, he'll basically be 32 years old at the start of that Souths deal. I'm not expecting Haas' fall from grace to be as dramatic as Taumalolo's was, but it will be a fall.

We got the best years of Haas, we made the most of them, we didn't overpay and/or over-extend the length of contract out of some sort of moral code to look after him after all he did for the club.

Phenomenal business decisions from all involved.

I think there is a fair bit of merit in the suggestion he could drop right off in form. He has maintained such a huge work rate for a lot of years. 1 more with us and I can see Souths regretting a 3 year deal.

If it was purely money, surely the Bears could have offered him more? The Roosters? There are a bunch of clubs with more cash to throw around than Souths.

This aint about money.
He seems like a super gullible dude and his manager never came across as the sharpest tool in the shed.
He almost left with Sonny Bill in his ear. Not surprised he folded under the combined influence of Fatrell, Bennett and David Tayl....Fifita.

How much longer will Uncle Wayne persevere ?
I doubt he is there when Payne`s contract is up .

Willison, BTK, Talty and Aublix to step up. And the next gen...
As others have said, his salary can now go to balance the squad - Shiba, Mariner, Piakura will all be looking at upgrades and will have Perth ready with offers.
However, he will be a massive loss for his metres and his effort.
One thing we won't miss is his teddy-bear tackling. I get it is a way of conserving energy, and he's still a great cover defender, but the arm-wraps have always irked me.

That would make sense. I would rather him be disloyal to them and leave them mid contract than us!
