OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

Awful news.

Suddenly a position of strength becomes a weakness and I can't see the club making use of that contract until 2028.

Brisbane have to make the most of this year, cop their medicine in 2027 and bounce back in '28.

Brisbane can take solace that they have a 10-day cooling period, but the writing appears to be on the wall.

Would be hard to plan your roster if you dont know when $1.2million might just walk out on you. And given his history of chasing money...

My only thought if Payne's management is trying to sell it is that Payne gets the opportunity to be actually coached by Wayne.

Wayne loves to talk about how Payne came to the broncos because he convinced him, but Wayne was sacked before Payne really hit first grade, so whilst he got to be there when he was a kid, he didn't get to play under Wayne when he was a full fledged first grader.

So it becomes a little bit of righting a wrong??

I could see that being a way for Fifita to sell it to him... we were coming through together under Wayne, but we never got that chance... come to Souths because it's likely our last chance for it to happen.

And then of course Souths pay up a ton and Uncle Russ says he can 'rent' his mansion in Bondi for free
 
I'd say with the R360 clause Souths are short term gambling on the comp never happening and by getting Payne to the club they would be thinking they are in a good position to keep him in the longer term.

It certainly is worth the gamble IMO.
 
I wonder if Haas' star will shine brighter in Sydney. Here Walsh has just captured all the spotlight.

He 100% earned every dollar he got here.

I really really think he is going to regret this. I wonder if it has something to do with R360 exit clauses, that Brisbane know he's gone anyway.

If it was a choice between maximising his squad and sticking it to the Broncos am I wrong to be uncertain what Bennett would choose?
 
I dont view any sports media, my sister told me about the haas news and I was shocked
 
It really doesn’t add up, I’m sure every club in the game is going to be cynical about the whole thing.

Uncle Nick absolutely fuming right now... rorters actually have cap space and he could easily give Payne a house to 'rent'... he gave Sandon Smith a house to 'rent' in Vaucluse and he's a backup half lol

This is similar to the way the likes of Penrith operate when it comes to the salary cap and player retention.. they put a value on each of their players and they’re disciplined enough to stick to their numbers and not allow their roster ‘budget’ to get pulled out of shape..

If the Broncos allowed Haas to go because they weren’t willing to let their salary cap be jeopardised by the possibility that he could walk out at a moment’s notice, that’s good leadership imo..

It’ll sting in the short term but it’s a far better way to operate longer term
 
Think its pretty cope to suggest Haas' best days are behind him. What we've ended up losing is a 27yo Haas in 2027 at $1.2m. That is a peak age for a prop and he's absolutely a winning player even when on 1/10th the salary cap. 2027 is in our premiership window with Pezet, and signing players for 2027 will be tough with Bears overpaying and inflating the market. Carrigan had reportedly asked for an upgrade a few months ago on his existing contract and now we've lost negotiating leverage with Willison too. Expect it will be hard for us to do too much with Haas money in 2027.
