PLAYER Payne Haas

He understands that his manager works for HIM right? I know he isn’t a member of MENSA but he should still be able to grasp that.
This wouldn't be the first case of a manager being highly influential towards their client, surely this has happened many times before. You see it outside of footy as well, a person might prefer one thing but someone close to them tries to push that person towards something for their own more selfish benefits while trying to convince that person its what's best for them. Its what makes a successful businessman.

When it all went down with Haas, Kemp mentioned on his podcast that as a young guy he basically followed the advice of his manager, because he was a young guy with no experience in the NRL and how everything worked, so he trusted his manager given he was experienced in the industry.

I think he mentioned that his manager said things along the lines of "it being best that he takes x deal", which I think he then flagged as some of the advice that led him to signing with the warriors.

I always really enjoy when Kemp talks about some of the stuff that goes on behind the scenes being an ex-player.... he's also a mad Broncos fan and doesnt try to hide it at all.

Problem for Haas (and us) is his manager isn’t getting a clip from what the Broncs are paying Haas.

If he gets a pay bump from us, the manager gets payed. If he signs somewhere else (if we’re stupid enough to release him) the manager gets a clip.

Until he gets his manager a clip, I don’t see this going away, unless Haas sacks him and I don’t think that’s happening…

Unless that court action against Haas' old manager succeeds I guess? But it's a fair point. Haas may not want to leave but his manager is going to stay in his ear so he can get a cut sooner.

Looks at his manager’s video, he’s a moron. After all these shenanigans, Haas SHOULD sack him. Of course he probably can’t because he probably has some link to Haas’s posse of friends no doubt.
He is married to Anthony Mundine's sister.

This whole saga is dying down. in interview Haas genuinely looks like he loves the club and doesn't want to leave, so in come David Riccio to save the day and stoke the flames:

“This one’s a little concerning if I’m a Broncos fan,” Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“You just know it’s going to rear its head as soon as the final whistle blows for the Broncos this season.

“It’s a major issue within that football club in relation to whether Payne Haas remains at the Broncos.

“If I’m a Broncos fan I’m not too confident, I feel like there’s movement here.

“We’ve heard recently about European Rugby for Payne Haas, honestly that’s just pie in the sky stuff to try and create tension and the prospect that hey, ‘You better come to the party Broncos or we’re looking at other options’.”

“It’s never a good indication,” Riccio said.

“The catch will be which club can afford him next year.

“A lot of clubs will just make room, they’ll just make room for people like Payne Haas.

“We’re sitting on a landmine here where it’s going to explode post-season big time.”

Here is the question we should ask.

IF the salary cap goes up by the $1.5 million - $2 million that has been speculated, do we then give Payne the extra 150k he wants?

I wonder if the club could just pay the manager a fee of some kind preferably off the cap. Not legal I know but surely there’s a way to do it just so he stops chasing the commission

can't we make this offer to his manager

we release Payne from the final year of his deal then he signs a new deal with us for exactly the same terms. that way Payne's manager gets his pound of flesh

Only if we're paying Pat more.

If other clubs will make room in their salary caps for the price tag Payne wants to get paid, I would let him go. He's not going to help any of those clubs in the long run - unless it's the Roosters, where the salary cap is more of a suggestion than an enforced rule.

I still don't care if he goes. I feel like his motor often hinders us. His inability to offload and constant need to make an extra few metres instead of hitting the deck and getting a quick play the ball closes any hole we might have been creating in the defensive line because they have so much time to set their line. It's fine within our own half but not necessary inside the opposition half. I often see these blokes who make a billion metres every year as a bit of a hand brake to some teams as it stifles their attack. Tedesco is another one that can do this, although he's lucky he does a million other things really well.

Such a weak move. I'd rather us lose Haas than do something like this. I'd rather us tell him to get fucked, if he keeps it up the club will never deal with him or any player associated with him again.

This offload thing is one of those things that just gets repeated enough that people believe it. He offloads just fine for a prop, he just doesn't push dumb ones and is more conservative with when he throws them.

These are the 2022 stats, only Flegler offloads more.
On season stats out of the forwards, he easily has the least penalties, the least missed tackles, the least errors (per minute), the highest tackle count, the most tackle breaks, the most line breaks , the most runs, most metres and most metres per run.

And that's with two busted shoulders for most of this year. The guy's a freakish talent for his age. In 3 years time he'll only be better.

His slow PTB is over stated, I'd say he's right in line with most props, there's a time to drop to the ground quickly and he'll learn that with experience but his average is perfectly fine. He obviously attracts more defenders but that's an advantage that can be used with smart attack. Last 3 games PTB speeds of our team.

Without opening the can of worms that is Kennedy, he's consistently excellent in PTB speed yet he's often overlooked for Palasia who is much worse in that area.

Yes. The salary cap increases, the wages increase. He'll still be taking up close to the same percentage of the cap that he is taking up now.

I would imagine there would be a clause in his contract that if the salary cap increases, his wage will increase by a certain percentage. Common for big name players to have a clause like that.
