Ray Warren to Retire

It's a beat up. Something that was said in passing according to Hadlee who went on to say that he is not and will never be a part of any succession plan. He calls RL as a fill in only and as a diversion to his main job on talk back radio, because it's fun.

Fun for him maybe.

I would love to watch Fox Sports..

But 9 have me by the balls. The HD was great.. And I don't have the HD package on Foxtel.

Once you go HD, you can never go back.

Just for reference, the HD on Foxtel is about 3 times clearer than the HD on Nine. If you were considering upgrading Fox.

I reckon about time, he's been pretty ordinary for a few years now (imo).
Hadley is shit to one eyed for me.
I thought the new guy , Matt Thompson, is pretty good & the heir apparent.
Another good caller is Andrew Moore on the ABC.
Hopefully this is a good time to clean house & get rid of Gould, Johns, and Fittler as well. God knows its become stale the commentary on 9

Thank **** Fox is showing all the games live. I have been spared the agony of sitting through another season with Ch9.

**** Ray Warren ....and **** Ch9.

Good riddance I say.

Trouble is the crop is 20 years old & its sour cream

Fox actually call the game and don't dwell on decisions from earlier in the game. They know when to joke and can actually string a sentence together

Interesting article regarding the "war" between Fox and Nine for NRL viewers.

Why Nine are losing the Rugby League war | Sporting News - NFL | NCAA | NBA | MLB | NASCAR | UFC | WWE | Sporting News

I completely agree with the general gist of the article, and really only frowned at the mention of Gasnier, but Fox's recipe is indeed far better than Nine's at the moment, and things are only getting worse for the FTA channel...

Yeah I thought it was quite a good article too. Also interesting that it is now up on nine's own MSN website, rare that a company would put up an article bagging themselves out isn't it?

You would think so but Rugby League is one of nine's products and they bag it out all the time too. They love a good player controversy and I've always found it odd how much they are willing to crap on about it.
Personally I like listening to Ray Warren and Phil Gould although it's true Rabs is fast becoming senile and this season is probably a good one to retire. Can't stand Hadlee it's like listening to someone calling a horse race and whoever is with him barely gets to say a word.

Yeah I completely agree. When Gould doesn't have an agenda, he is very insightful. Rabs is past it but he still has the nostalgia touch. Hadlee is seriously like a horse race caller and grates and Gilbert just doesn't change emotions and is always trying to be word perfect, it is boring!

I'd actually like to see Yvonne host all games as she is seriously good at her job. She gets on well with everyone and keeps everything on track while also being able to roll with whatever happens. I don't really know if I want her calling the game but some combination of Voss, Gould, Lockyer is good. I actually also like listening to Mark Geyer and Stirlo.

Lockyer? he has no ability as a commentator. He is just an example of someone getting a job solely based on who they are then how good at it they are.

While I disagree and sort of laugh at some of the points the article raised ("The highest rated Thursday night game of all-time!"), in general I agree with what the article has to say.

Fox continues to evolve and bring in some of the best media personalities as well as new faces who add to the coverage. 9 is still an old boys club that's beginning to pay for some of the decisions they made in the past decade.

In fairness to 9, the coverage has improved somewhat as the schedule allows them to use their A team for most games but they need to groom some more talking heads to help out. Enlisting Fatty as a commentator the other night says it all to me.

I like Fox's coverage but I still think there's plenty of room for improvement. To be fair, it has come leaps and bounds compared to a few years ago and I quite like all the different shows they have on. The issue I have is that the shows have a strong Daily Telegraph influence and there are times where they just blather on and on about the same subjects. To give an example, I love the format of NRL 360. To have all those different newsclips thrown into one show is really handy but there are times where Kent is just too much and I just tune out. Similar story with Hoops who now has an even bigger presence in the coverage - his analogies are like a car approaching a red light - they need to stop.

Gus and Johns are the only 2 really worth listening to on CH9 anymore, and even then it's not all the time. I do also like Fittler's always happy mood even if he doesn't add anything else.
