Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds hopes to start light training in the coming weeks as he turns his attention to helping coach Kevin Walters plot a winning path during his three-month absence.

Reynolds will miss 12-14 weeks after rupturing his biceps in the 40-18 loss to the Roosters last week.

He has had surgery, and club legend Trevor Gillmeister says that while Reynolds is not on the field he can still be a great help to Walters as an unofficial assistant coach.

Gillmeister said the 33-year-old had all the qualities to make a good coach in the future.

Reynolds outlined what his immediate future would look like and how he was keen to help inexperienced playmakers Josh Rogers, Jock Madden, Ezra Mam and Tristan Sailor in the coming months.

“I am on the mend. The surgery wasn’t too bad and I haven’t had to have too many painkillers,” Reynolds told Triple M Breakfast radio in Brisbane.

“I will get in and see the surgeon on Tuesday and get the tick of approval to start light training again and get some movement back in the arm.

“I still have a role to play. We have some young halves that could do with a bit of help and guidance. I can also help Kevvie out with game planning and the like. I am happy to do whatever he needs.”

Reynolds, on contract until the end of 2025, has spoken in the past about his desire to move into coaching once his playing days are over.

“Adam will be a great help to Kevvie, no doubt about it, and down the track he would probably turn out to be a good coach,” Gillmeister said.

“The game has changed a bit now, where you have specialist coaches looking after the halves, hookers and outside backs, which didn’t happen years ago.

“Any coach must do their apprenticeship. The best attribute Adam has is his demeanour. Nothing fazes him and when he talks people listen, and that doesn’t happen with everyone.”

The Broncos have premiership-winning heroes Walters and his assistant Allan Langer on the coaching staff, and Gillmeister said Reynolds was the cream on the cake.

“He will be vital, especially when you have inexperienced halves like Josh Rogers and Jock Madden there,” he said.

“The Broncos have two of the best halves on the coaching staff in Kevvie and Alf, and now Reynolds will only add to that.

“There is no doubt [five-eighth] Ezra Mam has learned a lot already just from playing with Adam Reynolds, and having him there off the field will provide a different point of view.”
