PLAYER Reece Walsh

Edwards is absolutely a beast in attack. Not quite on the same level as Reece, but has far less mistakes in his game too which is an attacking stat. That juiced up baldy is the best fullback by a country mile at the moment, and for under a million too.

As far as attacking goes, Edwards can find his front foot and get quick play the balls better , makes less mistakes . So those sort of make up for the fact he's not as fast as Reece. He can definately bust a tackle better too.
Edwards can't pass or kick, all his attacking ability's are either created for him via Yeo or Cleary or he runs like a centre(and to be fair he is damn good at that role and there is definitely a place for that role depending on the how you base your team around).

Walsh on the other hand is the creator he can do the cut out pass, the short pass or the short kick on instinct(does long kicks at a high level too), it's a completely different type of attacking style, he plays fullback basically one to one how Locky did back in the day with all the half skills but Walsh is just that bit more nimble and speedy which allows him to be very damaging when he chooses to run himself, but at the same time he is probably a bit worse in defence in return.

It is to be fair hard to compare the two when they play the same position soo differently it's very dependant on the rest of the team on how suitable they are for the role.

The fullback is the last line of defence, they are not THE defence of the team.

Who`s job is it to defend kicks ?
Who missed their assignment in last years GF that lead to the opposition scoring a converted try ?

Too busy / distracted to play the role the position requires . Half a player IMO even if Billy Slater believes he is the 2nd cumming .

People get too carried away when fullbacks aren't there to make the try saving play.

I compare it to NHL, where the most important player in any team is the goaltender, why? Because he is asked to save 40 shots a game. It's not entirely fair if you look at it from a team perspective but that's how your average mug down the pub looks at it.

Walsh definitely blew that and was ball watching, but for me that is a lack of experience more than anything, as a fullback he wouldn't be used to defending on the line and wasn't watching his next man which is what anyone outside the fullback would have been doing in that position and it did create the hole.

But none of that isn't something he isn't capable of learning from as it was a simple mistake.

That said with the momentum Penrith had they most likely were going to score one way or another given how much extra ball they had during that game and we were holding on by a thread, it's also hard to blame the loss on a player that got us there.

I`m talking about early in the game when he was having one of his "talks" with a trainer .
Penrith kicked a bomb Walsh was behind the goal line . The ball was tapped back by a Brisbane player and Penrith gained possesion and ran in a try while Walsh was no where to be seen . One of the poorest full back plays or non play I have ever seen !

And your excuse of he wouldn`t be used to defending on the line .
He played close to 50 NRL matches . You reckon he might need another 50 to tune it up ?

You are letting him off very easy IMO .

Panthers planned for it too, as part of my working through that Grand Final and demons- I spoke to a few guys and they said Kenny said during the week, Brisbane backs just tap it back If I stand behind the outside backs, I can score.

Stuff you, Mitch Kenny.

Compounded by Walsh needing attention from the trainer at that crucial moment .

That is one area of his game that must improve . The need for attention from trainers after every second effort he makes .

As bad if not worse than B Hunt dropping the kick off IMO .
Remind me of the final score in that game again ?

I've seen a similar situation happen about 5 times that season with other teams, the biggest issue wasn't Walsh in that play but the entire left side went forward leaving no one, unless Walsh was ready to tackle Kenny before he even had the ball he scores that every single time.

He was standing under the posts with a trainer and didn`t do his job .
That needing attention after every effort BS has to stop . You see any other players in the comp needing that much looking after by trainers ?

he wasn't, by the time Reyno kicked it he was sitting in the goal area and watching the entire play 10 meters away from the trainer, he was caught out by Kenny that's for sure but in a play that he wasn't there he would have been in the exact same situation.

Reason being is the ball could have easily been batted back to his position as he was the only player back there, given Penrith already read this situation that we send our entire side to the ball in these kick offs Walsh had to sit back anyway.

Also it was Alfie there he is a Blue shirt, the trainers that have a direct line to the coach not the Orange.

This is why Kev had to go. Zero tactics, zero adjusting on the fly, just poor all round. From the players too tbf.
