PLAYER Reece Walsh

Dylan Edwards is a poor example given the period they are in there career. I few years into Dylan Edwards career you probably couldn't pay a club to take him. I had more chance of catching a high ball than him
I think he comes out and kills the Cows.

I just wish he could be more consistent, we all do. You look at someone like Dylan Edwards, if he's not getting involved in tries you will find him running for 200 metres a game. If Walsh isn't setting up tries or beating defenders with his speed, he's not really a factor. Other fullbacks make contributions even when it's not particularly their night.

I think we are looking at the Rugby League version of Glenn Maxwell. If it's his night, look out. If it's not, tuck the bat under the arm and better luck next time.

Walsh 76 games, 35 tries, 18 forced drop outs, 57 try assists, 58 line breaks.
Has won 34 times in his 5 year career.

Edwards, 153 games, 53 tries, 6 forced drop outs, 40 try assists, 61 line breaks.
Has lost 34 times in his 10 year career.

Considering Edwards has won the comp every year since Reece made his debut, Walshy's doing alright.
I doubt he'll ever be a 200m a game player but that's why you build a team around him to make up for those loses.
He also would look a far better defensive player if he was defending behind that Panthers line.

Yep when Crichton extended the first time, it was being reported they saw him as the future fullback and he was getting paid on that potential.

They played him there a few times and he was woeful, which had them go back to Edwards.

You maybe onto something...
Right on cue last night!!!

And in the biggest hint yet that he is could be considering a change, Queensland legend Slater claimed Ponga produced one of the best games he has seen in recent years. Speaking on Channel Nine's The Billy Slater Podcast, the Queensland coach lauded Ponga for his influence across the team.

Slater admitted Ponga is getting more and more involved in play with every game and suggested there is no fullback more influential to their team. "He was so impressive. 10/10 to be honest," Slater said on Monday having watched Ponga live in Newcastle last Thursday.

"He is so influential in that football team and it's not a one-off. This was all of last year and the year before, he is so influential in his football side. They have won their opening two games of the season and it's off the back of Kalyn.

"Kalyn is the spark, he's the creator, he's doing a lot more kicking at the moment and he's controlling the attack. He's just got so much freedom and they are playing a really good style that gets him the football in good situations."

I should get a job in Media...

4 different coaches, probably all wanted him to do certain things their way and the team doing different things. Then there's Billy to throw in the mix too.
There was something last year that came out about Walters and Slater wanting him doing different things.

Catching the ball .
Not throwing passes on the ground .
Not kicking the ball dead from general play . Not kicking the kick off dead and actually attempting to tackle and or clean up kicks .

These are all basic fundamentals . It not about who is coaching him .

None of the excuses for his attack are valid for defence though. A few times against the Raiders it looked like defence was put in the too hard basket, that's where the worry is.

👏👏👏

We seem to be getting behind Reece thankfully as a club but due to his contract its only going to get worse for him the longer he is out of form.

Looking at him on that video actually got me worried for his mental state tbh. He's always been an ultra confident bloke and it seems right now even a win wasnt getting him hyped. I hope he isnt too hard on himself.

I agree. Watching him react and repeatedly hit himself in the head after making a mistake was quite worrying.

I understand that he has extremely high standards for himself however, I also think that he's acutely aware that if he is anything less than perfect, then people will criticise him for it.

His reaction post-game, both walking around the stadium and in the team song, was probably subdued as he knew that he didn't have a great game and that he was in for another week of heavy criticism.

I hope that he's had enough sense to stay off social media and turn off his phone as some of the comments about him, and his family, have been vile.

I really hope he is getting the support he needs. His struggles are almost all mental at the moment. Just hope he can get through it because we know he is capable of so much.

And justifiably so. The players need to held accountable for their performances to match their contracts. If they don't want to be held accountable, don't sign the massive deals then.
Sure the players and club will get around him but the money he is being paid now, you cant really put up with a bloke who has made 11 errors in his first 3 games and has thrown up 2 stinkers in a row.

Its a fine balance. If you take a huge contract there has to be an expectation on you that you need to perform, but it shouldnt turn into abuse either just because he's paid a huge amount of money. I think being critical of him is fine as long as things dont go over the top and get personal.

If he's not performing though and is struggling you have to look at the coach. We saw it with Boyd and Milford. They kept getting picked when their form was down and despite what people may have thought, they werent underperforming on purpose, they just couldnt do it anymore. Thats when a coach has to make the call. Hopefully Madge will make that call if his form doesnt improve.

Not fair considering how much the Panthers are on the juice.

I think we may have underestimated how much Ezra and Walsh fed off each other - both as an attacking combo but also each others energy.

Mam also created a lot space for Walsh on the left, Hunt just doesn’t offer the same level of running threat

Not denying he has been TERRIBLY out of form and ponga has been much better but this is how much the media controls the narrative with fans....

"Reece walsh can't be picked this year, his handling is shocking, they have to pick ponga"...

If that's the reason....

Reece walsh 2nd most in nrl with 9

Ponga... 1st with 11 after 3 games

That is gold.

He just has to make a better judgement when a play isn't on, the number of times he's trying to execute a play and they are up in his grill, if he can play those sort of situations a bit better he probably halves that error count.

He usually drops it himself or the bloke he is passing it to is about to get smashed and that guy drops it.
