I think it's up to him. If his heart is in it, then sure, play for England. But I hope he doesn't just take the English option because it's going to happen sooner, or worse, if he doesn't believe he's good enough to play Origin. That said assuming Inglis cures his pie addiction, Reed would always be behind him for left centre for QLD and Australia.

England need more NRL-hardened players like Reed and Widdop to lead them back to being competitive. To me the potential results are worth more than his motivations.

Plus it's nice to have yet another international in the Broncos 17 haha...

If he wants to play for the poms then good luck to him, he would make a fine addition to their team

Plus it's one less player affected by Origin every year. Bonus.

Saw the list in the paper today, effectively Beale, Hoffman, Glenn (NZ), Reed (England) and McGuire (Samoa) would be ineligible for Queensland or NSW. Noice.

I like it, good on him. Will be available all through origin time which is brilliant.

It's a no brainer for him. At 23 he probably doesn't get a shot at Origin for at least 3 -4 years then he finds himself at around 28ish and running out of time. Take the international honours I say and good luck to you.

I can understand playing for NZ and England as they are somewhat competitive and play often on the international stage, but why would McGuire ruin his chances of playing Origin to play for Samoa?

No disrespect to McGuire or Samoa, but I would have thought that playing origin and for aus (assumign he's good enough, which I think he might be one day), would be more of an honour and a thrill.

hell yes!

Depending on how he was raised, playing for Samoa might be a higher honour for him.

Michael Jennings played for Tonga and also NSW? Can't see why McGuire should be any different????

Oh yeah, for sure. That's what I meant when I said no disrespect.

I understand playing for your country, which ever country that is you chose, is a massive honour, but SOO must be a massive carrot for some players to declare themselves as australians.

Doesn't it depend on when you play in a World Cup cycle or some equally flimsy piece of legislation?

Probably correct, as was done with Tunza.

I think in order to try and expand the game on an International level though, the McGuires of the NRL should be allowed to play for those developing nations such as Samoa and Tonga without affecting their Origin eligibility. Of course there'd probably be blow ups from the Kiwis who want to play Origin as well I suppose.

Yeah, every world cup it resets. If you select samoa for the world cup you can't change again till the next one.

McGuire? I doubt it, but it would be nice indeed!

They changed the representation rules for minor League nations back in 2009 which stated that if a player elects to play for them they become exclusive members of that roster for at least two more seasons.

This is why Vidot chose not to play for Samoa last year.

The funny thing is, the ARL broke this rule with Uate.
