Ref's scull fractured by rock

If i'm not mistaken I remember reading about it in (RLW i think) that they make about $100,000 a year but only get year-to-year contracts, if they suffer an injury can't ref any more they get paid out for the rest of that year and that's it.
100k isn't bad but it certainly isn't "good" for the position they're in and what they have to put through to get to that level, only 20~ in Australia make it to that level (obviously the refs who do Origin get bonus' and what not).

That hopoate kid is 16 and still a fair way from first grade and is on 100k.

Do you have any sense of money. 100k is heaps.

Especially to run around and blow a whistle.

and especially when you only work half the year and your work week consists of a few meetings and 160 minutes of reffing.

And suffer criticism day in day out. Have your family abused by idiot suppporters.

Meanwhile players get paid a shitload for not much more than the refs do.

wtf 100k is NOT heaps for the shit they have to go through and when there's a .000005% chance of getting there, out of every possible ref in Australia about 20 make it to top level and that's with a 2ref system in at most there was 12-14 before and only the regular NRL refs(8 a week or 12-14 now some refs do 2 games a week) are on the 100k contracts. That's piss poor wage in context to what other professions get and what some 16 year olds in 3rd division nrl get.

I would love 100k a year but with the amount of effort and dedication along with the amount of shit they cop to get to that level I'd rather read a few books get paid the same amount and have people suck up to me rather than throw rocks and fracture my skull.

Bet you'd find a lot of police officers who don't agree with that.

Yeah well if you play that card dukey then footballers should be getting $5000 a year at most. Cops, teachers, firemen, ambulance paramedics, nurses, we all concede they do hard, sometimes horrific jobs and don't get paid anywhere near what they deserve.

Footballers get to play a game - ie, an enjoyable pastime - and receive up to $500K per year.

Don't even think about European and American sports stars!

Formula 1 wages are the one that always get me. It's pretty much about the car anyway. Kimi is reportedly on 35m a year, but given how shit the Ferraris are you could pay someone 500k and they'd have the same crap results! Ditto for a good car, they pretty much drive themselves, which explains why Webber has so many podiums this year!

Anyway, I don't see how 100k is heaps of money, and certainly wouldn't suggest something as silly as lacking a sense of money because I think that way. Money is all relative anyway, how you think about it is just as important as how much you have IMO.

Also, on the note of referee's salaries, I think it's very important that they get at least a reasonable amount of money, particularly in relation to what's in the game itself. If you don't pay them a professional wage, then you can't really hold them accountable as professionals when they screw up!

Yep. As a matter of argument, I'd be interested to know what the professional refs in soccer get, say for the Premier League, Spanish League, World Cup etc.

Only to compare them with respect to the player salaries in that sport.

I think that's where you can make a fair comparison of players vs refs in rugby league.

I think the last World Cup referees got paid 23000 quid for the whole tournament. For the Premier League, last I heard it was 33000 quid retainer and 1000 quid per Premier League Game. That was a couple of years ago though.

And what does an average regular player in the premier league get?

Really depends on the club they play for and various other circumstances, but I'd expect that most regular players would get 10-20k per week, but a lot of guys get from 50-100k per week too, including Lucas Neill [icon_lol1.

In other words, exponentially more than the refs.
Therefore $100K per year for an NRL ref is probably pretty good by comparison.
