Return of the reserve grade

What's the Buzz: James Packer reuintes with an old mate at Sunday's NRL Grand Final | News.com.au

THE NRL
will soon reveal plans for a revamp of next year’s competition format.

In a great move driven by chief executive Dave Smith, reserve grade will be re-introduced.

The Holden Cup competition will remain but reserve grade will be the major support competition to the NRL.

Not sure how it's going to be affordable.

Would rather they just refine the Holden Cup to require a minimum number of players under 20 (say 9/17), make it a pseudo reserve grade. that way you can have your best 8 reserve graders playing in that competition, and the rest still play Q Cup.

Then have the NSW Cup and QLD Cup premiers meet in a Super Bowl on Grand Final day.

if it gets off the ground this would be beneficial to most teams. I think the NRL suffers from not having a combined reserve grade.

though, I hate to think of what it will do to the QLD Cup and NSW Cup

Yeah. I think if they bring in reserve grade, you won't see the NSW Cup/QLD Cup match on Grand Final day, or indeed the NSW Cup grand final.

If you're going to have reserve grade, ditch Holden Cup. It's useless.

As long as the NRL can regulate the necessity of alternative careers for all U/20 players then I'd be absolutely fine with abolishing the NYC.

I reckon this would benefit the Broncos big time.

I'd love to see reserve grade back, that would benefit each 1st grade side. Not too fuss about what they do with under 20's.

As long as the NRL is subsidising clubs for travel and stuff, I don't see a problem with it. Gonna dilute/even out the QCup.

Personally I'd stick with NSW and QCup and have a Super Bowl on grand final day, that would be a really high quality game!

Holden Cup whether you like it or not is a draw card and a strength for rugby league, it's the only code that kids can play at a national televised level, great for junior development.

Yeah. But it's shit football.

And doesn't adequately prepare players for first grade.

There's probably contractual reasons why they can't just drop Holden Cup next year.
