Ricky Stuart signs with Raiders

Ricky Stuart is a coach that can coach strong rosters but can't take a team forward once a void is left.

I think this is a good description of Sticky's coaching. he sucks at recruitment, has a patchy record with weak teams but seems pretty good at motivating teams.

at Canberra I think he already has a pretty strong team to work with. there are some really good established players at the club like Shillington, Fensom, Campese and Robinson and a glut of young guys like Lee, Wighton, Cornish, Milford, Ahearn, Vaughan coming through. What Ricky Stuart needs to do at Canberra is get everybody singing the same tune and to get some of their former junior stars to step up and deliver on the promise they have shown.

Please, someone tell Griffin not to re-sign Norman...at this stage that is my biggest concern...

I love how all the commentators were saying it's poor form from Barba to break his contract. "Players should honour their contracts," blah, blah, blah. However most were encouraging Ricky to go.

Agreed and what makes it worse is the holier then thou attitude the Raiders took over Milford, but are prepared to look the other way when it suits them, you can't have it both ways because it will suit you. Hell Ricky and everyone else be it in the league world or just your average fan already knew what the status of board was like when he signed on with the Eels, its not like its already suddenly become a problem.

sure you can! that is the basic premise of being a dedicated club man. every team and their fans complain bitterly when it happens to them but rub themselves raw when they are going to benefit from it. The Raiders are doing it now, we've done it too and so has nearly ever club in the league

Why is it ok for the Raiders to chase a contracted coach in Stuart, yet not ok for the Broncos to chase a contracted player in Milford?

I agree Stuart wanted out of Parra but when you consider the whole situation it was a no brainer.

Both his and his wife's family live in Canberra, he has a special needs daughter and a Parra board ( different to the board which appointed him ) that stated publicly that they would't stand in his way if he wanted to leave.
Add to that he is returning to a club paying ( media reports ) around 1 mil per year and a club with much brighter prospects you can't blame him.

Personally, I'm not the biggest fat on Sticky BUT:

1) Roosters - Even when you have a good team, it is still hard to win a comp, not to mention make the GF. As many experts in the game have said before --> so many things have to go 'right' in the year. They won 02, made 03 and 04. He did some good here, there is no doubt about that.

2) Sharks - 50-50. From the outside in as a footy fan, from all media reports when the Sharks were going good - all was well and he formed some good relationships at his time here. Hard to judge the coaching once it all went downhill because the Sharks were a basket case then (still are tbh).

3) Eels - really? I mean... of course he could have done a bit better but honestly apart from that 'HAYNE TRAIN' 09... this club has been in trouble for a long, long time. Everyone knows it. 7 coaches in 7 years or thereabouts right? Still had massive problems administration wise before then as well. It doesn't look good on the resume but I wouldn't look too much into the Eels tbh.

So basically 2 basket case clubs and 1 'top-tier' club. I think Sticky is a little bit over-rated but I think he still has more to show. Let's see what happens at Canberra... which is also a club who has had their dramas though...

Phil Gould says today in the herald RS need a great board excellent playing roster and outstanding support staff to really shine as a Head coach. Uuuumm that's why you're on the big bucks Phil

Brad Arthur has been named as Ricky's replacement

Brad Arthur named new Parramatta Eels coach

He deserves a Victoria Cross as it takes a very brave man to take the reigns of Parramatta. I thought he did a decent job as caretaker coach at the end of last year and he has a good relationship with the players, has the backing of the CEO Steve Sharp and he has served as an assistant under Bellamy and Toovey so he might do some good for them.

For his sake I hope he has a long term plan as it will be a long haul to get Parramatta back to the top. Avoiding the wooden-spoon next year would be a start.

it may be a long hall to get Parramatta back to the top, but the board don't give coaches the chance or backing to do it
