Despite taking place in 2022, it's being promoted as the 2021 Rugby League World Cup since the tournament was supposed to take place in 2021.

Money would have been a factor. They had already done all of the branding prior to it being postponed.

Doing all of that branding again to include 2022 in it would have cost a shit ton of money.

While I do think the numbering is absurd, I think once the tournament gets underway, no one will really care or be bothered by it. Have to talk about something before it all kicks off.

in Australia's case, Michale Hagan came up with our numbering system with the Captain getting # 1 and the rest being assigned numbers based on when they made their Aussie debut (if they haven't debuted yet they are in alphabetical order)

The ARL signed off on it and when it was out of Mal's hands he deferred to his assistant to come up with the numbers. Neither of them drove it, it was too late to argue the point.

everyone has to use the squad numbering system assigning each player a number for the whole tournament.

but if you look closely at their squad they've gone with a system that issues players numbers based on their likely best 17 status
