BEN Hunt says the Broncos have suffered through their issues this year, but believes the fact they can move on so quickly proves they will put the James Roberts drama behind them.
The club’s star centre was last week rocked by accusations of a number of drunken incidents in Brisbane, with at least one incident, from August 14 at the Normanby Hotel, the subject of an NRL integrity unit investigation.
It is not the first drama the Broncos have had to face this year, with the now infamous “rat” prank from April plus a massive mid-season form slump just two matters they’ve had to deal with.
But halfback Hunt says Brisbane has moved on from all those problems quickly and it will be no different with the investigation into Roberts’s behaviour.
“That’s the best thing about a footy team,” he told The Courier-Mail.
“Things get swept under the rug pretty quick. Everyone is really good mates and you move on.
“We’ve had a few little issues but everyone has moved on really quick. We have a clear head now and everyone is excited about playing footy.
“We’re definitely closer at the moment. Everyone has been growing in confidence and enjoying playing with each other and getting excited about things.”
Hunt claimed he was not across the accusations aimed at Roberts, but said he did not need to know.
He said everyone at Brisbane sticks together and that’s what the club had focused on in the last week.
“I don’t know too much about what happened but everyone has Jimmy’s side,” he said.
“He’s one of our teammates and everyone is going to back him all the way. We’re just happy to have him in our team.”
Thaiday echoed Hunt’s sentiments and said he also did not expect to see Roberts earn a suspension over the allegations.
“He’s pretty quiet and laid-back with it all,” said of Roberts.
“He’s doing fine for the time being. I’m sure if he wanted to chat to anyone he would feel free to talk whoever he needed. He’s all good for now.
“He’s our teammate and he’s out there putting his body on the line for us week in, week out. Of course we support him.”
Roberts did not appear fazed by the ongoing attention at training on Monday, working well the rest of the squad.
It was a strong session for the Broncos, with Corey Oates (concussion) the only player to finish early.
Anthony Milford did work separately to the rest of the team for the last half-hour, engaging in some boxing, while Jarrod Wallace once again used the Monday session for recovery.
