THE Sydney Roosters are set to reward Mitchell Pearce for his elevation to State of Origin football by offering him a contract extension which would make him among the highest paid players in the game.
The Australian understands that the Roosters have opened talks with Pearce's management over a revised deal which would bind him to the club until 2012.
Pearce's contract runs for a further two years, but the Roosters are keen to head off interest in the 19-year-old.
Given his rise to Origin football, and the widespread expectation he will become one of the best players in the game, Pearce would expect to command the sort of money reserved for representative elite.
The Roosters' desire to extend Pearce's contract highlights the rapid improvement in his game and his escalating standing in the competition.
He only signed his latest contract in April last year, but since putting pen to paper Pearce has become one of the game's premier halfbacks, culminating in his representative debut for City this year.
Provided he takes his place in Origin III next Wednesday at ANZ Stadium, he will become the second youngest NSW player in Origin football and most predict it will be the beginning of one of the great Origin careers.
Pearce's manager Mike Newton confirmed an initial meeting had taken place with the Roosters and talks were ongoing. He also stressed Pearce had no desire to leave the club which gave him the opportunity to play first grade last year.
"He's happy where he is at the moment," Newton said. "He's very, very happy at the Roosters. He has no intention of going anywhere.
"He's learning a lot off Freddie (Brad Fittler). If we can come to an agreement, we will look at it."
Newton said any decision on Pearce's future would be made in consultation with the teenager's father, former NSW captain and coach Wayne Pearce.
"I talk to most parents until they get to a position where they're capable of making decisions themself," Newton said.

It's either me or the roosters don't have a f*cking cap I mean C'mon this is beyond ridiculous
Omeley, Mason, Anasta, Myles, Minchello, Fitzgibbon, Tupou, Pearce,
If as they are saying is even remotely true, Then I will go ahead and UNDERESTIMATE and say that all these players are on 300k(some of them are on 350 or even 400)
But If they were all on 300k that's 2.1 million on those players alone for 8 players ALONE
meaning there is 2 mill left for 17 players which works out to 117K each for the remaining 17 players, I mean surely there is something SUS going on here... Salary cap my Bottocks!
Only tupou and shillington are leaving to my knowledge.
