PRE-GAME [Round 1, 2025] Broncos vs Roosters

Ole Curt can set up a winger nicely .
Briers used him in set plays as the centre . Herbert would play front man and head infield. Capwell would go out and link with the winger and often put him in the corner with a slick pass .
Further highlighting Herbies no pass modus operandi .
Herbie is a brilliant 2nd rower. He's wasted at centre.

I am not going to pretend to like us having Gosieswki in our starting side but if he makes us better defensively out there I will happy. We desperately need to go to market for a suitable edge forward to replace him IMO. Riki will need to be good this season as IMO PIakura is significantly better than Riki.
Piakura is one of the most overhyped players in this squad. I mean seriously, what the **** has he ever done in first grade of proper note at all. I cant remember one game where he was a game breaker at all. If anything, he is one of our most laziest players in terms of workloads. The hype on this bloke is ridiculous for his output. He averages 70 metres a game with a tackle efficiency of 85% at 23 tackles per game. Oh and throw in the 3 offloads for last year from 18 games with his 3 tries. If anything, we need to serious look at getting rid of Piakura after this year if he cant make the jump. He isnt on a base contract so we cant continue to put up with those mediocre stats

People still talking about Herbie's passing while he had more try assists and line break assists than Staggs and Cobbo combined in 2024. Couple of nice ones against us too when he tore the Broncos edges to pieces in round 26. He's probably the best centre in the game of those that regularly play there. Would swap Staggs or Cobbo or Mariner for him in an instant.

Keen for the game. We looked great in the first 40 against the dogs. Fit and defensively strong, looked like they were taking pride in the dirty parts of the game which is a good sign.

Would be happy for shiba and gosiewski to start, neither put a foot wrong in the last trial.

Cpl of details there .
He played more on the right for the Phins . He may well have been under instructions when at the Broncos . As he surely has the skills but chose not to use them . Also was often used as a decoy rather than as the striker or link .

And short memory ? The amount of times he could have passed but decided not to and sacrificed tries ?
He had a cpl of pretty poor games that I watched last year mid season . Came good against the Broncos but that wasn`t his regular form .

We talk about it because we yelled at the TV whenever he stepped inside to run directly into traffic, leaving our man Oates hanging.

He was fantastic last year. I'd argue that might be because someone finally pulled him up on it though. As others have said, I vividly remember countless times where if he'd just put it through the hands we'd score, but instead went himself.

Paix 9 and Walters 14 is what CM are saying.

Gos left backrower. Piakura on the bench.

Definitely, but my point was I'm not sure why it's still being raised when he has obviously improved that part of his game, and is now putting our guys to shame in that regard (as well as pretty well everything else). Meanwhile Cobbo who some believe is amazing at setting up his winger has a grand total of 3 try assists in his career from centre lmao

For mine - we should be chipping away as many W’s as we can before Origin. For us to do that, we must have our experienced and reliable players in our 17.
Given who’s available, I wouldn’t make any changes to the starting 13 in that list but I would have
Billy,
Willison,
Jensen &
Marty as our bench.

Not that he didn’t put in the effort during the offseason but I would make Piakura wait so that he’s desperate & keep ticking the boxes at training 200% to get into the 17.
