PRE-GAME Round 1 - Broncos vs Eels

Hard to describe my feelings for tonight's game. Obviously I'm happy that the footy is back but my emotions are mixed with excitement and dread concerning the Bronco's 2021 fortunes. A new coach who is a club legend whom I rate highly in charge of a squad who are even weaker on paper than last year. Many of these players still have to shake the mental scars of an indescribable 2020 season. Not an easy job for our boy Kevie and whilst many are tipping a lopsided score tonight, I beg to differ. Opening day at home in front of a packed house will have the boys fired up to please their new leader. I don't see them winning but the margin could be single digits.
 
Honestly, watching last night's game it's hard not to be incredibly nervous, if not downright concerned. The game looks if anything even faster than last year, and we were simply miles off the pace of the game already.

With no way to combat that as far as I can see over the offseason, and a couple of guns in Haas and Staggs injured already, it's hard to take your Broncos glasses off and come up with a good, solid, objective reason why we're likely to fair better with an even faster game in 2021.

****, I'd love to be wrong, but I'm not holding my breath here.
 
I'm confident that we CAN win, there I said it. That said, if we don't win I think it will be an absolute bloodbath, I can't see Broncos losing a tight one, though I'd take it.

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to Kev's wondering eyes should appear,
But a Provan Summons trophy and a signed Bellamy contract to begin work next year.

He woke up Captain Glenn, to his team gave a whistle,
And to the field they came running like the down of a thistle.
And they heard Kev exclaim, as he jumped onto Buck,
HAPPY NEW SEASON TO ALL, AND TO THE BRONCOS GOOD LUCK!

I like that they’re doing their final session under lights finally, I would also love to see the fellas all wearing their game jerseys, no singlets and what not, every little bit counts.

Well, I suppose I could temper my expectations. It's just that tempering expectations and being a Broncos fan is for me a contradiction in terms.

As long as part of that "70" is the last 30 mins, that is, reversing the meek surrenders of last year when the going got really tough.

In any case, the task facing Walters to rebuild the team to reverse the progressive decline since 2015 is enormous, so what I am looking forward to tonight is a fundamental change, or at least seeing the beginnings of it, to our appalling, porous defence both out wide, and at marker.

The other thing - other than an improvement in individual form/commitment, is to see whether or not there is promise in our halves combination, and the role Turpin plays in directing the plays.

So those are the 3 things I will be watching for tonight. In general, I do not expect us to win, but I certainly hope we compete, as you say, for more than 20 minutes.

The NRL god of stupidity has bestowed 2 point field goals on the competition this year.

*EDIT* oh so that's from outside the 40m..................................FMD these rule changes are shit.
