Round 1 - Bulldogs vs Broncos - Post Match Discussion

Barba - Will be our best signing ever, definitely better than Folau considering he's in a much more important position and also can set up a try.

Maranta - his best game ever in Broncos colours, very, very happy with how he played.

Vidot - awesome signing, a strong runner, proved he's a fantastic finisher and didn't look out of place defensively.

Copley - he was fantastic and came up with the play that put us in position to win the game.

Hunt - awful, our halves are a major problem, I seriously think Wallace would've been valuable for one more year...

Hoffman - awful, looked like a winger playing 5/8, predictably he couldn't setup a try to save his life and his kicking is shocking.

Gillett - came up with a few important tackles, was happy with his performance.

Glenn - bdidn't notice him much

Thaiday - fantastic and played full of heart and passion, great response to losing the captaincy.

Macca - Suddenly, with our awful halves, he's become super important, would hate for him to get injured...

Kennedy - did not get anywhere near enough minutes but was great on the field
Hannant - did his job perfectly.

Parker - gee whiz hhe's a waste at prop. Put Glenn on the bench.

Positives -

Alex Glenn - Our best player all night in my opinion, constantly made metres every run, took plenty of hit-ups, good in defense.

Ben Barba - Played well, some really good decisions in attack, some good kick returns.

Dale Copley - Very solid, completely shut down Morris in defense, made some great metres in attack and set-up the Maranta try to win the game.

Lachlan Maranta - Never thought I'd see the day, played honestly really well, saved us on several occasions with good game presence and his work under the high ball, also made some good runs and scored the winning try.

Daniel Vidot - Made some great runs in the first half, no mistakes in defense that I saw, we'll have to wait and see how he goes in defense and under the high ball when teams target his side of the field.

Neutral -

Corey Parker - Slightly quiet game by his standards, I think playing at prop really took it out of him early on, still played well, and his goal kicking was nice to see.

Josh McGuire - Can't say I really took notice if any big plays from Josh tonight, still a reasonable game.

Matt Gillett - Wasn't that impressed, made a couple of good runs, reasonable in defense.

Sam Thaiday - Good runs towards the end of the game, some soft penalties by him, which I've come to expect, was slightly disappointing that he didn't play better in his first game without the captaincy.

Ben Hannant / Martin Kennedy - Did their job off the bench, made some good yards, solid in defense as per usual, not quite the impact I was expecting from them, but a pass mark.

Negatives -

Ben Hunt - Close to our worst player on the field tonight, several poor kicks, several poor 5th tackle options, pretty average passing game, solid in defense, really need better from him.

Andrew McCullough - I noticed several really poor passes out of dummy half from him tonight which affected our go forward, non-existent kicking game, which we need from him with us playing a Fullback at Five-Eighth.

Josh Hoffman - Haven't got a whole lot to say bad about him tonight, he's quite simply just not a Five-Eighth, he's a winger, we need someone who can help Hunt with more than just hit-ups.

Jack Reed - Honestly very disappointed with Jack tonight, didn't seem to have any impact at all on offense, bombed an easy try in the corner for Vidot, lazy in defense in the Tony Williams try.

Todd Lowrie - Please don't attempt to run up in defense and take Pritchard in a 1 v 1 ever again.

Anthony Griffin - This young guy on the bench called Jarrod Wallace could've really helped us after Lowrie came off injured, can't even fathom why he didn't at least get a 15 minute run to give a few of our guys a rest.

Also, for all the talk of disharmony in the club, all I saw out there was a team giving 110% and players backing each other up. Our only problem is our halves, which is a big problem, I can't see us winning against the better teams with Hunt and Hoffman. I will reiterate what I've said a few times by saying I'd have Sandow in the 6 over Hoffman any day. Hoffman is absolutely hopeless at 5/8, we may as well have Lowrie there.

Will require a review before I give any detailed impressions but obviously stoked with the victory first up.

In a lot of ways, I believe the game played out like most would have expected. Barba & Copley came up with some good touches, halves struggled and there were a couple of anxious moments.

Still looks like there is plenty left to work on and I'll be interested to look at it when I get my hands on a replay of the game but for now, I'm just happy to sit back and enjoy the win.

Let's not forget this is a 30% new team that will get better with time . Happy with that performance . Looked more dangerous in attack than the whole of 2013 and the defence was what won us the match. Strong showings from all the newbies. Vidot , Kennedy and the extra dimension Ben Barba . Lowrie copped a Pritchard special. Promising start all up.

Glenn was great in the go forward of the attack and very solid in defence.

I think I saw Glenn make more runs than anyone else other than maybe Parker, but I also saw him fall off some tackles in the first half.

I don't understand how Wallace didn't play given Lowrie went off. I do understand we have some high minutes players in our team, but if that is how Griffin intends to distribute minutes, then we quite simply must have Nikorima on the bench. Not to be screwed over as a backup hooker like Hunt, but in case we fall behind, because it's so obvious Hoffman wont win us a game from five-eight. I'd love to see Nikorima start, but failing that, can we at least have him ready off the bench in case we fall behind, and even as a bit of a live wire threat to test tired defences.

Also, was anyone else put off by the congratulating of Pritchard for KO'ing Lowrie. I would 1000% understand if he made a tackle on him that shut down our attack or forced the ball loose and they were applauding that, but honestly it seemed to me they were just hi fiving an injury.

There is also a period where Gillett did really well in defence. It's about the 71 minute mark, he makes 3 one on one tackles in a row. The 3rd one he shuts down the dummy half and kills all the momentum Morris got them on the play before. He's a shit defender at times, but he can have very positive impacts too, and that was definitely one of them.

Barba was ten levels higher than everyone else out there in class.

Maranta had a Copleylike turn around tonight and was great at everything he did.

Copley was great.

Reed was slow and bombed a try.

Vidot was was great and a real asset.

Hoffman still has no idea how to pass, useless at six.

Hunt again showed glimpses but poor overall.

McGuire was pretty good.

McCullough was good and sold three dummies but not motm worthy.

Parker was great as always.

Glenn looked better than last year.

Gillett was absolutely brilliant all night and great in attack and especially defense.

Thaiday was excellent and carried on his World Cup form.

Kennedy was good in his first game.

Hannant was very good.

Lowrie gave me a highlight anyway watching him in the dressing room.

Wallace?? Did he play?

Barbara fantastic out the back a lot of creativity left Hoffman for dead who just had a flat pass. Penalty counts was ridiculous especially since from my count there was maybe two in the last twenty minutes. What happened to free flowing pay. Really agonizing hear in that whistle so often in first 60 mins.

Sandow plays and I dare say we lose. Dogs would have run over him on our line. Hoffman defended pretty well even though his attack was crap

Also what's the go now with new rules of Captain only allowed to talk to ref. How will they enforce this.
