POST GAME Round 1 - Cowboys vs Broncos

About the Captain's Challenge, Seibs in his presser said we had a case for it : referred to a play where Farnworth chased a kick into the in goal, caught the ball in mid air, threw it back to one of our players before the ball touched the ground who then touched down for what looked a try to me, however the officials called it out over the dead ball line.

Anyone remember that? I can't find it in the replays.

Not a lot mention here but thought Hoppa did his job when asked. His defence was spot on and as such gave the 80 min players a bit of a rest with his energy.
Wouldn't be disappointed to see him as a bench regular.

Boyd was on there to help organise the defence. Well he needs to do a bit of overtime on his outside man (Oates) as he is still rushing in off his wing.

As big a detractor as I have been of Boyd, that is exactly what he was doing last night. He gave Oates several sprays last night, the biggest was when Oates let the ball hit him in the chest, didn’t even try to catch it, and then it went over the sideline.

He seemed to be coaching Oates on playing left wing, or at least trying to get his head in the game...

Yeah was off a Croft kick after he made the break late in the second half. I thought it went dead but might have been worth a look

Hopoate reminds me of Tonie Carrol, nuggety forward who hits well in tackles. Ball plays a bit too aye.
Arthars, Herbie and Kenner should keep Hall & Oates on their toes (Hall being Boyd).
Flegler is becoming a favourite, loving his work. His post contact runs just take so much out of the opposition, like Haas no wonder Turpin scored so easily.
Need more from Fifita, we cant afford one good run every 60mns. Was underutilised, should have doing his unders run every other set in attack.

Isaako was not just good, he was close to our best. Had a hand leading up to our 3 tries, scored one himself with some fancy footwork and booted every single goal. If he did drop one so did Haas but he deserves the accolades just the same. A 9/10
We fix up our errors, lads are definitely pushing for a top 4 spot.

You might not understand people raving about Milford, well I can’t understand anything you have said here. You do realise those runs, the staying alive in tackles and those ‘few offloads that are nothing special’ are what create opportunities for others and what breaks down defensive lines, right? The same things that have people staining their pants when guys like Munster do the exact same thing.

Seriously, the guy can’t win with some fans.

settle down champion. I’m a big fan of Milf and would love to see him back to his best, he definitely showed some good signs but I think premature to be raving that he’s back and a changed player... let’s wait until he’s actually creating opportunities and opening up the line. He’s a million dollar player none of us should be satisfied with a couple of offloads. I am hoping this is just the start and in a few weeks those offloads come with a couple of line breaks and then tries / try assists. Go little Milf. We all want to see him back at his dazzling best.

It is the Cowboys fan’s MO. They are the saltiest fans in the NRL. They find absolutely anything to whinge about. Starts with their coach and is a leftover of Thurston’s legacy. That’s why they are my most hated team and the team I need to win against the most.

It’s funny though because I grew up 2 hours from Mackay which is Cowboys territory but obviously growing up the Broncos were the gun QLD team in the early 2000’s and the Cowboys hadn’t done anything of note at that stage so use to be a pretty healthy split of Bronco and Cowboy fans.

Use to be a healthy rivalry because I think most Broncos fans up that way adopted the Cowboys as our second team because they were considered the local NRL team and genuinely wanted another QLD team to do well and vice versa. Cowboy fans were very respectful of us and would jump on the bandwagon come finals time when their team would inevitably not make the finals.

However that is all changed in recent times. A lot of guys I grew up with were Broncos supporters until the Cowboys started having some success and have jumped ship like true success seeking bandwagoners. And now the old Cowboy diehards have pretty much turned rabid against the Broncos no doubt due to repressing all the hurt of watching us obliterate them every season until their first win against us in 2004. Tall poppy syndrome is the main cause of it.

I never use to mind them and genuinely wanted them to do well and win a comp, 2015 changed all that though. Their true colours have come out and that rivalry is a full blown one now. They walk around lime they are better than us because of that one season in 2015

Do I dare commend the referees last night? Game flowed well, no howlers from the on-field refs or the bunker, no square up penalties.

Hopefully a sign of things to come..

The referees tend to let our games with Cowboys flow which is what usually makes these games a great spectacle and is why a lot of these derbies have been some of the best matches of the year.

The only time it skews away from that is if the media and NRL directive at the time is to jump on the cowboys love a thon and give them every possible leg up to appease the self anointed everyone’s second favourite team

While it was good to get the win, the real test as to where we stand will be against souths, who will atack some of our weaknesses (roberts' speed opposing boyd, reynolds with a good kicking game to exploit our fullback defending in the line etc.) and likely defend stronger.

A positive that i did notice was the increased amount of times our halves actually passed it to eachother. Another facet croft brought, was when turpin ran from dummy half, croft pushed up to support him. This led to one of croft's line breaks. If we can get milf and isaako doing this, we will only improve.

Oates cant have many more off nights as there are capable replacements. I think he has shot himself in the foot by only signing the one year again, as his position is not as secure as it once was.

I actually thought one of the breaks was down to Isaak doing exactly that. I thought it was a feature of his play.
As for Oates, he'll be playing next week but I think his preparation for the game will be gone over with a fine tooth comb.
He looked out of sorts. Why? I have no idea? A virus? God forbid!
Anyway, I'm not getting carried away as South's will be a much harder opponent but if we do the simple things right there's no reason they can't be beaten too.

Yep, I remember it, I thought at the time it was worth a second look, but play just went on.

TPJ cited by MRC... looking at 4-6 weeks. Ridiculous. Was worth a penalty at best. Golden boy Latrell regularly drops shoulders into defenceless players on the ground and never gets pulled up. It’s like they’re trying to police aggression out of the NRL and make players like TPJ extinct. Damn shame. Might as well make it touch footy

We had Glenn, Bird, and Lodge out, but we were lucky they had McGuire out? That's not doing his job. On last nights performance, both teams at full strength maybe Broncos put 40+ on the Cowboys and don't concede as many as 21. It's probably all over by the 60 minute markeasily, but he's doing his job? He might wanna try not sounding like he is bitter

Offa too, and lost Bird 2 days earlier.

Settle down? If you can’t have someone dispute your opinion without thinking they have lost their cool then maybe the internet isn’t for you.

The Broncos have to challenge this, contact is clearly made with the ball and it isn't late.

yer TPJ's first tackle of the season and he's gone for a month. Dumb Motherfucker. Similarly to the Maloney incident last year, its when he hits a guy on the ground. I get being aggressive, and I think both incidents looked worse than they are, but just play a bit smarter please. We prefer you on the field.

A couple of things stuck out to me last night

While some of our defence improved last night.. still a long way to go!

And we are finally scoring points off kicks! Something we've been missing for the last several years. - talking more cross field kicks.

That is thanks to the new halfback signing, his style and execution. This new string in our bow might be the difference in games we lost by less than 10 points in seasons gone by. I mean you look at last night already.. usually these games go to golden point. We won it by 7
