POST GAME [Round 10, 2026] - Broncos vs Sea Eagles

Pre contact metres.

Manly 6.31m
Brisbane 4.85m

645 more metres before they get tackled.

Obviously line speed is the surface level explanation, but I’m wondering if you have any deeper insights on why this may have added to why this occurred?

They were jumping the 10m early every tackle. They got called for it once at the 60 min mark.

Geez that was awful. Didn't like when Karapani got called out by the ref for his pro foul and our captain was nowhere to be seen for that interaction. Not much effort all round.

More disappointed that there was an error in that set of six that the ref, touchies and video refs all missed but then we end the set with a sin bin. One of those things that just happens to us and we are supposed to believe it’s an accident and not consistent behavior from those with the whistle

Think it's a few things, smaller pack which isn't getting rewarded anymore.

We have gone back to 2000 and just whomever has the biggest tanks wins the war.

Second thing some of these guys are now well beyond their limits of stamina- Preston Riki has played four NRL games in two years and been off the bench a lot in Cup and been a Cup player since 2018, Talty been a bench player at NRL even at Cup he did it frequently. Tawha has been a bench Cup player, Semu Cup bench player, Aublix Cup player for three years.

One of them on the bench is fine, but all of them against Manly monsters you're going to physically get monstered.

I do think one positive out of last night was Verhoeven. He is way too raw and hasn’t grown into his body yet sure. He also made mistakes but definitely wasn’t alone. Yet he made a pretty decent line break, scored and was the only back to actually make metres. He isn’t ready just yet but you can see what is waiting when he is.
Now by no means do I think he's shit (just putting it out there up front), but to be honest, I've been a bit underwhelmed with him. With the hype around him, I expected a bit more. Now totally understand it's his second game, he's young and hasn't played a lot of cup yet but there have been other 19yo to come into the NRL and have looked pretty good straight off the bat.

I think he'll come good if the hype is right but he looks to have bad Cobbo vibes for me especially with his hands. I know I'm being harsh but just expected a little more given all the talk around him. At present, he looks to be a good 2 to 3 years away from regular NRL.

I think Mam is getting a bit too much shit put on him about the forward passes. Willison doesn't know how to run a proper line and is infront of him every time.
Mam is dogshit. We should be trying everything to offload him to the tigers. Even without the forward passes, he cant defend to save himself and he doesnt even have the game sense to know what tackle it is. Literally dont think ive ever seen a half take a hit up on the 5th tackle.

It's because our line speed sucks and therefore we can never dominate a tackle. It's just gets worse from there.

In attack, we're missing all our usual hard runners that can make us metres or break the line: Hass, Piakura, Staggs, Mariner... the substitutes are getting monstered every run (or in Walsh's case last night, not running at all).
I feel like defensive linespeed and offensive attack/runner speed are inherently linked. In the end it all comes down to fatigue and because of six agains it can snowball pretty quickly. Our linespeed sucks because we were tired, we were tired because our opponent was making more metres and getting 6 agains.

I can forgive Madge the X to second row for that game. What would Hamole have done to Gos or Junt in that position next to Mam? I thought that part of the game plan worked well, we contained a bloke who is a constant threat in every game but he didn't seem to do a great deal lastnight because we were all over him.

About the only thing that did go well with the game plan, but hey, it's something.

More of a concern for me was a) the lack of direction from our senior players who were still there, and b) the general tone of the guys on the paddock. They looked like they didn't want to be there in the second half, and fair enough they might not have, they were on a hiding to nothing, but that's the first time all year they LOOKED to have given up. And that's a massive concern that Madge needs to get on top of and turn around ASAP.

Is it that they're exhausted from putting in 110% every week to cover the injuries? Is it that they're sick of being on the wrong end of officiating week in week out? Is Madge pushing them too hard (lol media)? Is Brookvale a shithole? Is there discontent within the squad? Is it because Kotoni is our energy and without him no-one has any?

Whatever it is, it needs to be nipped in the bud and fast because that attitude was unacceptable. As were some individual performances, some players sorely need to be dropped. I know we have a manpower problem Madge, but come on mate, the axe needs to be swung. My gut feeling though is he will give the same guys a chance again next week, then the bye to rest, and probably the same team again when they return. If performances are still poor, then heads need to roll. The senior players need a ****ing rocket too, that was abysmal from most of our 'leaders' out there.

I mean all true, but the last two game our line speed and offensive runs have sucked right from the start (before fatigue can be used as an excuse).

Errors. Again. We were competitive (and victorious) against other teams even while down on troops because we respected the ball. 30% completion rate in the second half (I think that's what I read?) is atrocious and the number one reason we couldn't compete. Opposition defensive lines being able to leave early and choke us doesn't help, but it just means we need to roll your sleeves up, take the tackle and go again. The last 25 minutes, while we still had a chance to come back, I saw a lot of really soft options that showed we didn't want to do that, went with low-percentage plays, and shot ourselves in the foot.

While I can't blame the halves for looking shit while having to work off zero platform, I can blame them for pushing passes or going for the pretty option over any genuine substance. And there is an argument that our leaders should have stood up, we are missing a lot of that experience while Haas, Staggs, Jensen, Reynolds and Walters aren't there.

While 28 points let in sucks, I really do think that is an impressive defensive effort considering the stats. We were flogged across the park in all metrics, and when that happens you're generally looking at 40-50+ season-ending floggings.

I think dummy half has a lot to answer for. Getting our forwards running onto the ball and not just passing to the guy standing flat footed while the defence is already in their face. A little guile and creativity from the ruck might help.

One of the more disappointing things was Walsh not sprinting back to the 20m to take the hit up after they kicked it dead. Karapani and Arthars both guilty of doing this in weeks past, throwing a long pass instead of making that 40m effort to win the next set. Of course we get monstered that following set and get no go forward as a result

Wasn't that the tap where Manly jumped off their line when our guy was still a couple of metres from the 20-metre line and hadn't even tapped the ball yet? Almost like they had been able to leave their line early all night, hadn't been pulled up on it, and expected the same here.

Earlier in the season Paix would throw some nice face balls that got our forwards outside the rushing defence, but saw none of that this game. That fake thing he does, especially after a quick ptb, pisses me off so much. Just rifle the ball to the open side, you're just slowing us down with the ineffective fakes. It's like he knows he needs to have a bit more deception but has no skill to be able to execute

The best teams in the comp all play flat and hard to get ahead of the opposition linespeed. If your first pass out of dummy half isn't borderline forward, you are shooting the the team in the foot

Paix is very limited in attack, there’s no doubt about that but it doesn’t help when the forwards are one out running and going down like a sack of potatoes. A big forward pack might get away with this to an extent but not a tiny, reserve grade standard one.

You just reminded me of a massive pain point I have.

When we are trapped in our own 10 metre, our backs who are taking the hit ups stand way to far from the play the ball and are usually flat footed. Then whoever goes into hooker, lobs a slow lazy ball.

Our backs then usually start their hit up with the defence 1m from there face, with no momentum, and usually standing super upright which causes them to get hammered and dragged back.

It kills me. They are tough carries at the best of times but we are terrible at it.
