POST GAME [Round 11, 2022] Broncos vs Knights

@Super Freak

Thoughts on the lead up to the Riki try?

Were Brisbane entitled to a 7 tackle set? It appeared to come backwards off of Young and I didn't see a touch from Milford or Gagai when Mam spilled the ball.

Why do I love listening to all of our players interview clips this year? Obviously buoyed by our form but there's just a real spirit there that I am loving so much, everyone is not only bigging one another up and talking highly about each other ("mateship" lol) but also constantly referring back to the work we need to continue doing. Amazing stuff.

I really liked that.

They were all over us in the first 20, we couldn't get into the game but they backed their defence and hung in there then took opportunities when they came. You will never be at your best every week but the good sides find a way to win even when they aren't playing well.

Gamble is no superstar but he stood up and did what he had too. I just think accross the board from 1-17 everyone is contributing.

We are getting to that stage now where winning is a bit of a habit. They have the taste of it and have figured out that if we stick to our structures and back our defence we'll come out on top.

I also LOVE that we aren't so reliant on Hass. Our forwards minutes are nicely spread and because they are all preforming we haven't been having those fade out periods in the game.

Mate, most of our wins have been like that, only in the Manly game do I think we come out of the blocks firing, nearly every other win has been a game where we showed resilience and then put them away late in the game.

Annesley has backed both “howlers”.
Re the Obstruction call:

“It was certainly not a ‘howler’ as some have suggested,” Annesley said.

“The bunker official was Grant Atkins who is one of our leading referees, and the circumstances were such that the decision could have gone either way. The rules state that a ball carrier must not run behind an active block or flat runner and disadvantage the defensive line.

“The critical question is whether the ball carrier passed the ball before running behind his own player. The rules also state that defensive decisions that commit defenders to initiating contact with an attacking player will not be deemed obstruction. Both of these rules were considered in reaching a decision and although people are free to agree or disagree with the judgement of the bunker, the relevant rules were objectively assessed in reaching the decision.”

Re the Knights no try:

“There was clear separation between the hand and the ball and it was not re-gripped before the ball was forced,”
I've always liked that Annesley guy. Smart operator.

Also just want want to bag that playing surface last night. It resembled a piggery to be honest. I'm surprised there were no knee injuries as huge chunks of the turf were lifting when players were digging their feet in. Not like our hallowed turf which is obviously the Chuck Norris of playing surfaces.

Ours can take a week of torrential rain and then allow the whole competition to play on it over a weekend and check it out next Friday it will be pristine. Despite the forecast of rain all next week.

They completely relaid Lang Park this week. It was ready to go Monday.

Absolute inverse mentality in this team. They look like they all get along. No factions or cliques. Do we have that whole "Rank Kevvie" post from the first season? The psychology of the team was always the issue, because the talent was always there. We were always dropping points because there was a lack of trust in the inside defender, or as to whether someone would make a line break (not backing up). Now they're constantly making good calls to shift in defense, knowing they have teammates pushing through, and small breaks are turning into big ones.

Kevvie got a 6/10 from me in that thread, where others were giving 2s and 3s. Now I would give him an 8 or a 9, because they're almost running smoothly and the mentality is amazing. They are young kids and all it took was a couple of good, mature leaders to point them in the right direction. Reynolds and Capewell have been excellent buys. You can see how good Capewell is in those clips. He's drawing them in, and laughing and smiling, being the fun uncle, where Reynolds is like the dad you want to impress.

One other major difference is that both of them are questioning the ref and doing it well. They aren't whining or throwing their hands up, they're approaching the ref well and asking for clarification and it's having an effect on the game-running.

It hasn't been mentioned much but for me the turning point of the match was when Staggs was able to jar the ball loose from Lachy Fitzgibbon a millisecond before he was about to plant it down for a try.

A converted try there makes it 12-0 after defending their goal for most of the match until then. It may have also taken the wind out of their sails a bit. From that point onwards, the Broncos had the better of the play and really took over. They had a couple of lucky calls which have been widely covered in the media today but what match doesn't have it's share of controversy. It's part and parcel of the sport. It was a real character defining win. Who would have thought six weeks ago that the Broncos would be in this position. It's really quite incredible.

As for Milf, I thought he looked dangerous in the first half and asked a lot of questions of the Bronco defense. He fell away in the second half but he will be an asset to Newcastle. He will be an even bigger asset to Redcliffe next year. Playing under Bennett will do wonders for him. He is still a young man. He has plenty of footy left in him.

Xavier got his nose out of joint over Tommy Dearden. They were best mates, living with Macca, who was also moved on.
You're probably right, but I like to believe it's because he didn't want to be humiliated by Cobbo's rise. Imagine if Coates was still contracted for another year, Melbourne's offer would have gone to Cobbo instead. Coates would be playing reserve grade and his value would have tanked.

Speaking of Suncorp Stadium, would it be worth having a roof that can open and close? At least you can then avoid it turning into a swimming pool when there is consecutive days of torrential rain.

Oh I don't think Cobbo would have anything to do with it (unless they don't get along). Selwyn was in the centres last year, and barely rated.

He was jumping ship to train under the best coach in the NRL, from the wooden spooners with notorious issues to a premiership favourite that's been the NRL gold standard in recruitment and training. It's something of a compliment to be targetted by Melbourne, and even moreso to replace the fastest winger in the league. If he had the shits with the Broncos and didn't rate Kevvie, it wouldn't have been a hard choice. Whether he would've stayed to play with Tom, we'll never know.

You’d hate to be the opposing Titans winger and centre neDT week wouldn’t you. How fired up will they both be for Indigenous round?

Frightening to think if they raise their level of intensity even further.
I can confirm, Cobbo and Staggs will score 7 tries combined between them.
