POST GAME Round 12 - Broncos vs West Tigers

When I think of our halves, particularly one Mr. Benjamin Hunt, the phrase failure to launch comes to mind. I would be very interested to look at his last 50 games as the full-time halfback and rate 1. great 2. passable 3. Not good enough and see how many of each he ticks. I think it might be telling.

Bit rough to dump this on Hunt, at least he was trying to make something work, just none of the players who knew any of the plays were doing anything, and our other half was again, well under cooked.

This part I don't understand. If not now then when? Other clubs know Roberts has speed to get outside and around, why not use it more. I agree the left works and works well thanks largely to Oates and Boyd but having a speedster on the other side and a handy winger/fullback in Kahu has shown they get results when they get a chance with the ball. More ball equals more confidence equals more meat pies. No point holding back and "not showing all your cards" theory till later in the season, they are there, need to use them more.

Many a person has tried to understand how Bennett thinks. No one has worked it out yet.

The turning point in the match was taking the 2 points. We had been camped in our half for nearly 15 minutes. Finally, we get a penalty and a chance to put some pressure on and tire out their defence. Instead, we give them a 2 minute rest and put ourselves right back in our own half. Then all of a sudden the two points didn't mean shit because they grabbed 6.

Last year the tactic worked for us, until the grand final. This year it's just costing us momentum and a chance for our attack to get some rhythm.

The Broncos, and other teams, take the two because sides give away intentional penalties to reset their line knowing that sin bins practically don't exist in the sport; the likelihood of square ups later in the game is another sweetener to employ this tactic. Just watch the last twenty minutes (the entire second half was slanted towards the cows to be fair) of the GF if you want an example of refs ignoring the rule book.

I'll bet Roberts is spewing he is at the Broncs, his strike rate is going backwards.
Last year the 2 halves were universally being announced as the new Kevvie & Alfie, They look more like heckle & jeckle this year.
Ive said it here from day one, Hunts kicking game is abysmal and it hasn't improved in 3 seasons. MILF is superb when things are going our way but hides in dummy half or gives hospital passes when not. If you include Blair we had 4 dummy halves on the field at one stage. We are playing a very, very boring style of footy this year, hit up after hit up after hit up, flat out making 30mtrs at times, hope MILF can do something on the last. Jack Ried was best on field last night followed by Kahu followed by Wallace, the rest of them either didn't get a chance or just followed that same boring game plan. That team should have smashed the tigers its as simple as that.
I've got grave fears that Walters departure has had a bigger effect on this team than anyone cares to mention

Feeling better this morning about things( empty bottle of rum says I'm not feeling good) but I'm feeling better about this season. Definitely in a mid season rut but I think I'm looking for answers in the wrong places. I was whinging last week about Hunts kicking game( which isn't good) but when we can't even get midfield after 5 tackles I don't know what we're expecting from him...they are consistently getting stuck down our own end, we were there all night again last night... so yeah put Parker and Maguire Thaiday and Gillett out there last night and we would have a different result purely off gaining better field position. I hope that these narrow losses are adding fuel to the desire...I hope that they are learning from these losses and to be honest I'm glad this is happening now as Ive felt since the season opener that something was off and hopefully is being addressed because this side could be anything

Are you having a laugh? Considering the circumstances I thought Reed was the worst on the field.

A lot of people are pinging Hunt but he tried his heart out. The Tigers had us covered quite well across the park. Milford not getting in position to take that shot was massive - he had around 2 plays to set up and he should have known it was his to take. Hunt was furious he had to take it and broken with the miss. Pangai put some 'Teo-like' shots on if you will which was awesome to see....Sua was caught out a few times when the Tigers moved the ball down his side, however is physicality in tackles and strong runs were impressive for someone of his age. Glenn was also exceptional tonight. I just hope we can reform and take a few lessons from that one.

Not sure if it's been posted anywhere but McCullough is having surgery on Monday, broken thumb.

Pretty impressed with TPJ too, going off last nights performance if have him in front of Herman, he could be a serious impact player

Well ****, that sucks. The year where we don't have a great backup 9 option, McC starts to get injured :(

How good was TPJ? He reminds me of Taumololo with his strength and speed. Would love to see more of him.

Last year we were lucky through Origin and won every game. This year looks a bit different unfortunately. Hope we can bounce back with a few wins.

Pangai & Su'a both impressed me last night.

Pangai ran harder and hit harder than any Bronco has all season, really enjoyed watching him. Su'a played the full 80 and showed some great signs, worked all night in defence and tried his hardest in attack, he didn't have much to work with though, Hunt was feeding him trash all night.

So you don't consider that for a halves combination to be successful, that they need their forwards to be dominating the opposition.....?

Interesting.

Of course I do - it's critical. My point is that our halves are playing isolated from each other, as individuals rather than combining, playing as a unit, supporting each other, running off each other ... like where were those superb in-out passes from a few weeks ago that even Matt Elliott waxed lyrical over on nrl.com?

That is what I am on about in large part.

4-6 weeks for Macca according to The Broncs site.
