PRE-GAME [Round 13, 2023] Broncos vs Warriors

What about Herbie to FB and Mariner to center?
This would be my pick but I can also see Kev going with

1. Arthars
2. Oates
3. Herbie
4. Staggs
5. Periera

Because our forwards will need all the help with metres they can get.

If you wanted a backline based purely on metres you could try

1. Herbie
2. Oates
3. Hoeter
4. Staggs
5. Periera

But are they the type of metres that are going to be there? Mariner doesn't run from dummy half- three times this year is it and he doesn't do hit ups. Are Brisbane going to have enough quality ball for him to stand at centre and can he then run and make 140m from nine runs like he does with Rogers giving him the ball in space.

If it's the type of game where he can stand there and get the ball then all good but if he needs to come and win his own ball. I think you'll struggle to see him.

Hoeter and Periera would be much better value if it's a get your own ball type of night.

In the few games he played in the top level last year, he made over 100m in each.

No he made 96m against the Roosters but that has no relevance to questioning the type of service he's going to get on Saturday with a depleted Broncos and lack of momentum where you might have to make your own and you wanting him on the wing.

But this is where probably our expectations are different. I would personally prefer to put Herbie at fullback and Mariner to centre but if he isn't there, the only spot for Mariner is wing. The Warriors are basically full strength and fresh, I am not expecting a win, so I want to give our kids time, I don't care if they aren't perfect at the lower level, this is possible short-term pain for long-term gain.

And yeah, 96m is SO much less than 100. Lets just forget his 133m in his other other game as well.

It's got nothing to do with prefect, but you have to fit the purpose and the game. If the game requires extra yards out of your end and dummy half running, why would you pick a guy that doesn't run from dummy half or return kicks?

If Herbie or Staggs was out then I'd say Mariner for sure would be next and he'd be fine he still wouldn't help you get out of trouble, but he'd be fine at centre.

Sailor to debut for us at fullback.

Walsh:

“Tristan is a freak. He is a big reason why I have been doing what I’m doing at the Broncos. In pre-season, he was training crazy and he was pushing me to be better. I would love to see him get an opportunity this week to pull on a Broncos jersey and come back to first grade. I can’t wait to watch him run out there and it will be a special moment for his family and his dad.”
“He has come a long way from what he has been through, it’s all through hard work and trusting his ability. Tristan is skillful enough and he is good enough for the NRL. If you watch him, he is skilful on the ball and he executes plays well. He is light on his feet and he is very strong, He is prepared to do the hard work and he’s a tough guy, so it’s a great opportunity for him and it’s a bad thing in a way for us because other NRL clubs might try and sign him when they see how good he is.”

Surely these origin affected games would be planned since the start of the season? I mean, would our boys playing in the lower grade have been given instruction over the past months to focus on key areas to prepare for these games? They have been building the next man up mentality which means that they all should be ready for the call up, but I would imagine that there would be a fair amount of planning to this. We were always losing a few this year to origin.

Kevvie's been playing pick and stick all season, so maybe not. He hasn't been showing us any young forwards or backs. Palasia and Arthars are Seibold signings. He's had ample opportunities to give Piakura, Willison and Mariner a run.

Sailor trained at fullback so that's a pretty big indicator.

Sounds like Kevvie is looking to replicate what Walsh brings as much as possible by going with Tristan, which is fair enough.

I just hope he doesn't go with Palasia as the makeshift Patty 😐😐😐

Most logical move really, and requires the least moving parts.

Sailor is the obvious choice. Asking Herbie or Arthars to play out of position with 5 key players gone is just too much. The less disruption the better.

Renegades run the same or similar sessions as the first grade squad so Sailor would already have a decent idea as to what he can expect from Walters, Reyno and Mam. He also did the pre season at FB so will have trained with the main squad during the reset at the start of the season. He will be up for this. Excited to see what he can produce

Cobbo very occasionally runs from dummy half .
Oates doesn`t , neither does Arthars . So what difference does it make if Mariner doesn`t ?

I haven`t seen Herbie do anything in the air close to the line that inspires confidence with high balls sent his way .
Can`t defuse bombs , doesn`t pass . Yep ideal full back ...
