That was actually a pretty good game tonight. Souths almost stole it at the end if not for a horrid bounce and Burgess not attempting to catch it. Cody Walker just has x-factor all over him, so strange it has taken him so long to crack first grade, particularly if you compare to someone so average and overachieving in Alex Johnston.

And that's loss #10 of the season for Souths.

Once again, when the game got into an arm wrestle and came down to a series of individual contests, Souths found themselves beaten all ends up. To compound the issue, they continued to shoot themselves in the foot by going for all or nothing plays when they just needed to get themselves back into a contest. A good example of this was part-way through the second half where they had just repelled the Panthers and were struggling to make ground. Instead of kicking the ball deep and backing their defence to force an error, they threw the ball to the newbie Joe Burgess on the last and surrendered field position. They were never in the game after that point.

On the other hand, I thought the Panthers showed plenty of promise without being outstanding. Both Cleary and Cartwright showcased their ability and while they're still raw in certain areas, they seem to have the instincts that seperate them from similar players in their age bracket. While we're on the topic of State of Origin, if I was George Pepponis (Chairman of the NSWRL) I would make it a mission to develop these players. Cleary especially is the type of talent the NSWRL desperately need to look after, their inability to develop a dominant halves pairing has been their biggest downfall this past decade.

Back to Cartwright, and it was his vision with 20 left to go that ultimately won Penrith the game. He caught Souths completely off-guard with his ability to play what was infront of him, resulting in Nathan Cleary scoring a scintillating try that put the Panthers well and truly in the box-seat. Around ten minutes later, he was into it again, setting up Grevsmuhl with a well worked heads up play.

When I named my Origin team earlier today, Cartwright was the first player I picked.

In fact, the first names I picked were all rookies. I wanted a select few to help build the foundation for next year's fresh start.

I really hope for the contest's sake, Daley has the same opinion.
