POST GAME Round 17 - Broncos vs Panthers

Technically at the time he signed he was, but anyway, I'll be honest most of the million dollar players don't impress me. Foran, Milf, Taylor, DCE, Hunt. Probably more I can't be bothered coming up with currently. Even Bird if the more outlandish rumours are to be believed doesn't even get on the field. We're not the only team with a million dollar underperformer and to be honest I'm happier we paid Taylor that money then DCE (massively overrated in my opinion). Look how trash manly are without Turbo. Actually yes put me down for DCE as your answer as some will agree he is worth it.
You've just proved my point in that reply. That list of "million dollar players" come from 4/6 bottom teams. Million dollar players make the players around them better, not the other way round. And they win, pr keep their teams in the game, all the time, period.
Agree about manly and dce. Tommy turbo deserves to be in that list before all of the above, not just dce.

I think this has a lot to do with poor direction. There is no set plan. It takes too long to get the ball wide to our edge forwards and our middle forwards aren't running onto the ball and aren't being positioned well by the halves/hooker. There is a lot of work to do in the middle, but to start simply and have 2 runners ready as options for the half with a predetermined goal should be step 1. So often there is a slow spread wide which is easily shut down, or a one-out run back into the ruck. I think Haas is just strong enough to make meters regardless, and Carrigan seems to find meters somehow. But they really need to be getting shown a hole or even half a hole by the hooker.

Also has to do with a good kicking game and of course kick-chase.

While Haas certainly is the best prop in the game, I'd still like to what havoc he would wreak running on our edge, setting up our centre, or running a line in their red zone. Swap him with Fifita
100%.

He'd be significantly more effective for 80 mins getting out of the middle. He'd not only bend the line, he'd get his nose through and get way more offload opps. I'd call him a Kikau clone but I think he's way better than Kikau. Kikau has size whereas Haas has size and better footwork - could be devestating pairing him and dearden up side by side with Katoni sniffing around too.

We need a hard nosed prop anyway to teach these young kids how it's done. It's a perfect match.

I can see something in your argument for Boyd at times but gees your love for Kennedy is admirable. I think you're just about the only person I have ever met with good words about him as a player. Best I have heard from anyone else is "Didn't do anything wrong in his second stint."
Well, it's not love but I just believe a lot of folk expect a kid front rower to be just a shade behind JWH standard or they're garbage. Two weeks ago he played for 39 minutes in his first ever run on role. He made 139 metres, 54 post contact metres, 27 tackles with a single miss...and was called garbage. I thought it was a good performance. Had he played 65 minutes I'd have no doubt he would have over 200 metres and 40 odd tackles.

I just believe calling a kid front rower shit is unfair and will ALWAYS stick up for players, especially kid players getting smashed up in the toughest role. I know his stats on face value aren't spectacular but they're not garbage either. He'll get better with encouragement rather than derision.

I can just picture rhys Kennedy sitting on his laptop after the game saying to boyd "I'll play better next week because Huge and a few boys on broncoshq believe in me"
Btw, I'm a fan of the cheap and no frills kennedy

Don't disagree. He's a hard working bloke who is bloody thrilled to be playing the game. You need people like that, they are your clubmen. They put in, they may not set the world on fire but they don't have to - salary cap demands you have a few less expensive investments who still put in hard every week.

Again, it’s with a heavy caveat of him being depth, or bench at best. I seriously doubt he’ll ever be a starting prop and only is with us, because we have a horrendous injury toll and our roster is a complete dogs breakfast, that no-one is accountable for apparently.

So you're saying Taylor is better than DCE?
My personal opinion is that although he is probably less consistent currently, I see more upside in him and think it is strongly linked to the side he has played in. He has played in a bottom 4 side for years and still competed with DCE in every stat throughout that period. Think he was even leading try assists overall a few times throughout those years. The only thing stopping him from being better in my opinion is his mental strength on and off the field as we all saw last year. DCE getting captain of QLD killed me because it makes it harder to replace him if someone does challenge for his spot and I still think he is heavily overrated. Sure say it is Titans salt and bias but he really just doesn't impress me at all. Certainly not worth the lifetime 1.2M a year contract or what not.

Didn't actually see those stats, actually fairly impressive. I am assuming the Broncos v Dragons game, which would explain why I hadn't seen them because I was at the ground which made it hard to see his contributions other than the soft first try and penalty to get them up the field for the second I believe. All for supporting young uns. Will try to watch more closely going forward.

Gotta disagree with ya there sorry bud. If DCE quit the eagles he would walk straight into another club paying him north of 800k easily.

He's a leader, speaks well in front of the camera (commercial value), drives the team around the paddock very well and is a solid investment.

2020 stats - 5 Tries, 11 Try Assists, 783 Run Meters, 5 Line Breaks, 50 Tackle Breaks, 13 Offloads, 6,978 Kick meters, 36 Missed Tackles, 20 Errors, 7 Penalties.

Accolades:
Rookie of the year '11
RLIF HB of the Year '11 & '13
RLPA HB of the Year '11
Clive Churchill Medal '13
Dally M HB of the Year '14

Ash Taylor - he does alright for a bog standard halfback.

2020 stats - 1 Try, 12 Try Assists, 367 Run Meters, 3 Line Breaks, 12 Tackle Breaks, 9 Offloads, 2,841 Kick meters, 43 Missed Tackles, 20 Errors, 5 Penalties.

Accolades:
Rookie of the year '16

I know where my million bucks would go and it ain't on a player who has had a lot of personal issues and cannot compete with DCE on raw stats, is not the same leader and doesn't offer much if any commercial value.

I personally cant believe the general atmosphere in here. Tonight we were playing the minor premiers who have won 11 straight. A complete contrast to us. Given the season we have had and motivation levels of both teams... i myself was actually impressed that we put in such a competitive 80 minute performance. Easy to forget we are missing 5 starters, have a two-match halves combination, an edge forward playing to preserve his body, an all rookie bench, no attacking coaching structure and up against a team oozing confidence.
We need to be circling next week's game against the Titans and go hard for it. Play Iike that and with a bit more polish we can win it no question.

Totally agree. Shy of 2 weeks without Pies and we actually didn't look totally lost. We made errors, defended them fairly well. We actually pushed them pretty hard - they made errors through good defensive efforts. We had a couple of lucky calls - but so did they. I thought that was a respectable performance.

We play like that for the rest of the year, we definitely don't win the spoon.

To be fair half those stats still don't impress me given Ash has played one less game as well and has been death ridden by the media most of the year. You also missed forced drop outs of which Taylor also wins 9-7. The only stat that impresses me there is his kick metres and that comes with being the only kicking half I guess. Maybe they could afford a better one if he wasn't on 200k more than Ash. ;) Also note how any awards are 6-10 years ago. Drives the team around well... judging by their rapidly dying season I am going to go with a big fat agree to disagree on that one. We are one win behind them for gods sake and we were tipped for the spoon. He is by no means in a different league on field. Off field, possibly. Sure he may be slightly better and getting 200k more a year I would hope so, but I still stand by he is heavily overrated and not a million dollar player either. Difference is Ash will get a reduced contract and in my opinion still be playing at a comparable level to DCE whereas Manly are stuck with his lifetime 1.2M contract.

I just don't see a massive gap personally.

And double the run meters, 5x as many tries, 50 tackle breaks to 12, less missed tackles etc.

As for Manly's fate, being down Walker and Turbo doesn't help them.

As for rep duty, can't see Ash getting a look in any time soon, not only because DCE is incumbent and captain, but because we are swimming in (better) halves. Heck, we have halves playing centre, DH and FB.

You know what I did notice that really needs sorted?

When theStorm/Rooster/Penrith tackle a player invairably there will end up being three in the tackle.

The way they attack the ball carrier is so coordinated it's almost choreographed.

When we tackle we have guys left behind the ruck, we have guys flapping around like punch drunk sailors, This leads to poor or no markers, and players still on their arse and as a result we rarely have control of the ruck. It also means teams can step off the mark and get away with it and finally it allows opposing teams a quick ptb so they can roll down the middle of the field all night.

We really need to work hard on coordinating our group tackling technique.

100% agree. There was an instant early in the second half where Paas was holding up a player and the ref called held and Paas just released him. Any other top team would have then put the player on the ground and slowed the ruck again to allow the "legs-tackler" time to set at marker. It seems very simple when you watch it back. We just need to train in this area.

On an unrelated note, we received a lot of 6-again calls on 1st or 2nd tackle within our 20 m zone coming out of trouble. How can the team request a penalty from the referee in place of such a useless call?
