POST GAME [Round 22, 2023] Broncos vs Roosters

I still feel like we don’t get enough out of flegler when he starts. He had really good defence last night but only made 6 runs. Not sure how many minutes he got either but seems more suited to the bench.
pulled off some hits though and held the middle. i thought did his job in a middle battle. no backward steps. having Pat playing as a 4th middle and Palasai a 3rd prop...flegs job was D good coaching and Flegs filled his assignment

Ive been excited by Willison and Piakura for a few years now. Piakura had me growing some doubts but it’s awesome to see both of them looking first grade ready. The club has really handled their development well, same with Mariner.

Great to see that we are back to being a club that just keeps churning out talent and doing a good job of bringing them through to first grade.

The big difference imo are these Q Cup numbers:

Willison: 26
Piakura: 29
Mariner: 21

Most of the prior crop (Staggs, Riki, etc) didn’t even crack 20 cup games before being handed full time first grade careers. There’s a good chance these guys all get 30+ cup games before becoming permanent first graders.

Then we’ve also got Ben Te Kura who is already sitting at 19 cup games with no suggestion of an NRL debut any time soon.

Can someone explain the staggs no try off the kick early on in 2nd half? Bunker just said "supporting on field decision". Clearly on side and the bunker says nothing?
This was ridiculous. Never seen a “supporting onfield decision” for an offside which can clearly be seen on video. The refs were fucked this game.

Penalties ended up being 7-8. Now bear in mind, we were 6–1 at one point because they were all over us trying to slow us down to hold on as they were getting destroyed. So what exactly happened that made us go from that to the total opposite direction?

One suggestion: KPI of evening things up.

That second half was not even close to being of a professional adjudication standard. It turned into an absolute farce. And how in earth did we end up without the ball after the referee getting in the way of a certain try? I’m not saying he did that deliberately of course, accidents do happen but how the Roosters got the ball out of that I’ll never know.

Don't forget the wonderful decision not to send JWH to the bin for the head shot on Payne, just total amateur refereeing.

That was a great win. Seeing Patty's try made it worth going to a Thursday night game.

Geez, the Gabba is so bad to get home from. That new train station will make it so much easier.
Yeah I didn't go to the game last night purely because it's a nightmare getting out of there with only the bus station available... Late Thursday night game and hours to get home... pass

Nah, it's game situation. Can't bin a player there. Not wearing those colours. Game situation.
Ahh yes just like calling time off on the drop out leading up to half time... what the **** was that call??

Are they going to start pulling that out at the end of games or just never be seen again... I'll go with the latter unless of course it occurs against a team in maroon.

Ohhhh I forgot about that gem as well.

After sleeping on this and reflecting on our win i cant help but wonder if corruption was at play with Atkens, because i refuse to believe any official is that incompetent.

In a competition rife with incompetent officiating, this was the worst ive seen to date and i refuse to believe that an individual can make it to first grade refereeing being that terrible and the only course left is to believe he was on the take.

The only thing that makes me think otherwise, was the fact that we did get some pretty handy 6 agains on the 5th close to the Roosters line, and if you were on the take, i dont think you get given those kind of penalties/infringement rulings.

When Atkins blocked Smoothy then turned the ball over to the Roosters on the back of him obstructing play, all i could think in that moment was that he was on the take.

There was some utterly baffling calls in that game, and i know im yelling into the wind and nothing will come of it, but he should not be allowed to officiate another game this year.

Ive said it before and i will say it again.
The only way i see a crackdown on poor officiating happening is if a Grand Final is lost by a team on the back of blatantly bad calls like last night.
Otherwise it will be just like this week in week out, the same way it has been all season.

Fucking frustrating because the first half was the best half of footy this year, and the second half might have been the worst half of footy this year because of the ref.

Looks like the coaching staff have solved the issue of Mam getting rushed everytime he gets the ball on that left edge. The outside players now run back infield giving Mam an option to pass. It seemed to work pretty well, Herbie almost got through the line at one stage.

And you just know in Annesleys briefing on Monday he'll either ignore the game or back Atkins rulings.

I'm leaning towards him ignoring the game given these decisions are impossible to justify
