PRE-GAME Round 22 - Broncos vs Panthers

I'm being lazy here, but can anyone tell me if Perese is a right edge or left edge centre?

Um, no offence, however your post makes no sense. Not getting value for money from Milford? He was and remains, our best player, and his inconsistencies are more to do with the fiasco with our halves and Dariu$$$ than Milf's skills and form.

Bird? I seem to recall he was coming good and playing really strongly before his injury. For mine he's a game breaker and key to our backline strength for next year.

Ramien? WTF? Looking at his record I'd rather avoid him and focus on Bird.

Oates? Amongst the top try scorers and his metres aren't to be sneezed at. His form has dipped, sure, but again, whose hasn't in the backs?

Our problems for mine are an appalling recruitment and retention strategy in the backs. Far too much has been focused on the forwards.
Bird will have played in approx 16/48 games by seasons end. At the reported money he is earning this does not represent value. Ramien is apparently looking for 300k per season over 4 years. Using that as an example to me Ramien looks better value.
Milford may well be our best player in your opinion however he is now a fullback and is earning similar to RTS Ponga Teddy and Turbo. Milford is not in the same league and imo never will be as a fullback. He will be off contract soon and I doubt very much that he would agree to a lower amount to stay. There has to be better options out there for less money. Look at what Raiders managed to do at fullback.
Oates is our leading try scorer agreed but whose to say we cant pick up a better option. Oates has feet for hands.
Anyway its all about opinions and I respect yours.

With Bird I would be looking to see if he'll provide value in the future rather than looking at how many games he's played for us in the past. He's been hampered with an injury the Sharks wouldn't work on or even make him aware of which took him out for the bulk of his first season here, then an ACL picked up in an unfortunate tackle this season. I'd like to think the first issue is unlikely to reoccur, as for the second is he more likely to have that happen again than any other player in the same position?

Reality is Bird is a right centre, he was going good before he popped his knee. So if he returns, means I guess Kotoni moves back to the left which hopefully he's happy with. Where does Isaiah play? Unless they've already agreed to release Bird?

I can actually see Izzi having a similar impact to Papenhauzen as he is all pace and power. He could end up at fullback although i havent seen much in him in terms of kicking of passing.

I'd be prioritising Fifita over Oates, if it comes down to that. We will still have Bird, Staggs, Isaako, Herbie Farnworth, Xavier Coates, Shibasaki, Boyd and Perese all vying for those outside back positions.

not necessarily ...

depending how Perese goes, next season's backline could be:

1. Milford
2. Isaako
3. Staggs (right)
4. Perese (left)
5. Oates
6. Bird
7. Dearden/SOS

that would be a pretty handy backline to go with our dominant forward pack

And a lot of pressure/responsibility on a rookie halfback.

This is what i am hoping for.

I know people here carry on about Bird and his "value for money" but i honestly believe he could be a gun for us at 5/8.

Could it be more about introducing and giving him a taste??

It sounds like he is starting to train at left centre which could be an indication Seibs is considering a permanent move for him, but wants his defence to improve.

If Perese's defence is so suspect I'm happy for him to not be starting.... having a liability defending on the edge cannot be overcome by attacking quality (Coates anyone).

For anyone in the know is Perese a legitimate left sided player or another right side player being shoehorned into our troublesome left center spot??

Also in regards to losing Kennedy for Perese I'm pretty sure Kennedy has been getting the junk 10-15 minutes anyway.

Just means we get Carrigan playing 50-60mins

I think you're right.

My issue with this is that the move strikes me as a compensation for the obvious. That the Broncos attack is struggling, so instead of making the appropriate changes like bringing in Sean O'Sullivan, Seibold has instead drafted a back onto the bench. A move that doesn't really address the core issues in the side but lets him off the hook for some because 'he's trying things'.

I don't like the move either because it's an unspecified role. Perese has no idea where he'll end up on the field and he'll have very little feel for the game when he's on. I also think it comes with a lot of unnecessary pressure, because when he is brought on, he'll be asked to make a contribution from his first touch to ease himself in.

Furthermore, it just puts the other outside backs like Shibasaki and Staggs under pressure. Shibasaki has obviously struggled, but he strikes me as a confidence player who if he's going to go onto succeed need to be shown some patience.

If Brisbane were in a similar position as Melbourne, I wouldn't have an issue. However this is do or die and after the past fortnight, this was Seibold's ace up his sleeve? We all know what this is about, and the fact he's taking swipes at Luke Keary just goes to show where his minds at.

Seibold intended it to be a swipe at the media, but when you bag out another player's stats and go into specifics, it's a dig.

I just see that comment and the Perese move as Seibold trying to make the most of it, instead of actually addressing the elephant in the room.

and if true would mean a third different position for Bird for his third season with us...

Frustrating....but i feel he's a centre for us....

Maybe he knows exactly where he'll end up though.

can i be honest; i actually don't have a issue with a bench of hooker, 2x bigs and a outfield player. More and more forwards are coming through who can handle 50-60 minute stints, and that bench offers far more variety to cover unexpected injuries...

plus....maybe its how we see SoS and Dearden being reintroduced into the top 17..?

Problem I see is the role is undefined and could be involving anything, which ideally I would want a guy with great instincts and feel for a game, come on figure out what we need do it.

I am not sure Perese has shown he has those skills at centre with a clearly defined role. Hard call in the middle or second row.

I get what he is trying to do, come on for 15 minutes, tired forwards and use his feet and speed to make a break but a lot of things will have to fall into place for that to happen.

I think his best game was on the wing for Queensland this year, he had clear goals and stayed out there. No decisions to make.

It's a massive test and got a sort of Matty Bowen feel about it when he would get picked on the bench for Origin.

He may have been given a basic outline, but that can all change if a player isn't playing well and a change has to be made. However from what's being said, he'll find himself out of position which isn't what you want in a game of such significance.
