Round 24 - Panthers vs. Broncos - Post Match Discussion

The 17 from tonight could never win a comp..14 of them would be a good start, Sanderson, Wallace and Lui/Tasi need to go..undecided on which, 1 tries his arse off but doesn't seem to have the physical ability, the other has the ability but doesn't do the work.

Can someone please explain to me what Thaiday is good for at the moment other then 3 penalties a game? Seriously please, someone fill me in. Terrible performance from him. Segeyaro ran rings around us and we let him. Add to that some abhorrent referee decisions and you have the makings for a pretty awful evening.

That's it for season 2013. If we find a way to f**k up the Barba signing, I'll be livid.

Season 2013 was over before it started, tonite we got monstered by a pack that won't even be participating in the post season, so many problems with this team and I am sick of pointing them out, we r a bottom 4 side and that is exactly where we will finish, never thought I would see the day.

After having watched this match, and the Souths v Dogs, I would rather have a top line hooker than a Barba or a Milford, AND an organized set of forwards who the hooker directs the play, controls the middle and sets the edges moving, according to script and improvisation.

But the key, aside from fitness, and fast play the balls, the key is organization. Awareness, support play.

We don't need an on-field organizer, we need an organized team well coached, and a dummy half who calls the tunes.

We have neither

Very dissapointing performance all round. Our forwards were out run by a very underrated Penrith forward pack, our halves came up with some poor and predictable attacking options and our backs didn't look threatening at all apart from the occasional spark of hope. Was pretty pissed with some of the refs calls but I don't think it would've mattered to much in the end anyway. Great performance by James Segeyaro he was easily the best player tonight and I thought he was the difference between the 2 teams.

Griffin's philosophy of bulking up the boys and going for strength over speed backfired completely as they didn't have the energy to get any go forward or to take the ball out of our own half as we had serious problems with that tonight and we didn't seem to have energy left in the tank, at the 60th minute I just knew Penrith were going to win as it looked like the boys couldn't give anymore. He needs to slim the team down during the pre-season.

I thought Jack Reed and Matt Gillet were our best tonight btw.

Four games two of which were brilliant and you want to write him off? The panthers were the ones holding us down forever. I remember us on their line and them holding us for quite literally about 10-15 seconds. The refs were horrible but that doesn't excuse horrible defence.

Those 2 tries by segeyaro were so embarrassing. Surely now that our season is over we can stop playing wallace and actually try something different. Hook needs to go

Reed had a good game. Nice to see him get fired up as well.
He's a very intelligent player. And some of the little things he does with the ball in his hand near the line just have that touch of class. If he had the athleticism of a Ferguson he'd be the best centre in the comp.

i remember reading not long after Thaiday was named captain, Parker say that the right man got the job ... if he doesn't think he is the right man, why should he be captain. let him just focus on his game.

What's he supposed to say? "Griffin made a mistake and Thaiday shouldn't be captain."

Laughable argument.

It's not even strength though its just size, all the boys looked weak as piss tonight with the panthers standing in tackles all night.

he didn't need to make a comment at all. or if he was asked a question about it, he could have said something like "While i am disappointed, i will support Sam 100%" the fact that he specifically said that Thaiday getting the captaincy over him says something.

besides on the Thaiday captaincy argument, it took Lockyer a few years to become a good captain... i'd give Thaiday at least another year to develop. Many people in the know (including Lockyer) have said his captaincy has improved this season, although he still does have a way to go

We have a very soft underbelly and weak as shit up the middle. Getting Barba and Milford will not fix this. Obtaining Kennedy for next may help a bit but it won't be enough to make up for some of other forward's lack of aggression. Apart from Hodges, we have no 'leaders' that can lift the team when we need it (Lockyer, Smith etc) and steer the team around the park and I don't think any of the guys we are chasing will fill this role in the short term. When they become available, I'd be throwing everything we have to obtain either Cherry-Evans or Smith.

Not real sure what is getting done with the obvious defensive deficiencies as the same old shit has been happening all year and to a large part of last year. It is like the coaching staff are unaware of them (i.e. defensive problems). We very rarely win the ruck and wrestle, and let other teams get to their feet way to quick. And ffs, let's be a little more desperate to get to our feet for a quick play the ball. Watching guys like Hunt and Gillete just amble to their feet after getting tackled is not fucking acceptable. A bit of aggression and desperation to get to your feet after being tackled wouldn't go astray.

I've been a big supporter of Griffin as it seems the players all love him and I'm still clutching at him making the Broncs a force again, but **** I'm quickly losing my patience with him given that there has been no improvement whatsoever throughout the year in defense. Our attack I think has been solid and I think we march up the field quite well, especially since Wallace has been benched, but defensively we are atrocious and a figurine made of paper mache would be harder to get through than some of our forwards when defending our line. I'm happy for Griffin to have another crack next year but he needs to make some more hard calls and get rid of more deadwood in this team as I don't see a future in the NRL for a few of them. I think the Broncs need to be looking at what coaches will become available following next year just in case Griffin isn't up to it.

So Penrith made a good 500metres more than us last night and only had 4% more possession. I'd imagine they had a lot more possession in an attacking position as well.

Aye, I wouldn't be surprised if the game was played 65-35 or even 70-30 in our half. Rubbish.

beautifully put brother Nab.
Disjointed teams that ask no questions at the ruck appear much slower- at the current play and especially the ones that follow.
It is pointless arguing the good argument to some on here who just don't see the tactics and Griffin as being the problem. In a Bellamy coached team, who value timing and precision at the ruck, our 'numpties' would be great.
Please watch the magnificent 'lateness' with which Cameron Smith executes his plays- watch the way each ruck play I s designed to slide defenders around and create space on plays that follow. Consider how they create confusion about who is going to receive the ball which affects the numbers in the tackle and the speed of the play the ball. watch the way t hey can mix it up.
That is a clever team.
Us?
I feel for our forwards who get ambushed on every play.

Spare my days- Hook is an under 16 coach who has created a very dumb out of touch team.
This is ver old news though.

I believe the approaches to the hairdresser and Milford, both unpredictable and off the cuff types, is a clear message that tactically we are not in the race with other teams.
Throw the book at a coach with at least a modicum of mouse FFS.

So you want to throw a book. And a very small amount of mouse at Griffin. It could work. But I don't think he'll give a rats.
