Remember the mantra of not so long ago, in the case of May's tackle it was late (very marginally) it was high, there was forceful contact made with the head of a player who had passed the ball. It would have been a sin bin and he would have been charged for certain not so long ago. The perfect example is Dale Finucane on Crichton I think it was.

See the common denominator in those two examples, give you a clue, it has to do with the attacking and defending teams.

I read the report back from the Finucane charge and Dallas Johnson and Bob Lindner must have said 45 times about control and how Finucane wasn't in control. He does spin around and even in commentary it says Finucane has no control there.

"In this regard, the panel was satisfied that the player was careless, taking into account:

  • the fact that his line of attack was entirely unimpeded;
  • the complete lack of control that he displayed at the point of impact.

Imagine two cars in an RTA.

Car ‘A’ is at fault with a head on collision with Car ‘B’, resulting in a serious head injury to the driver.

The police turn up and declare it’s only an accident, it wasn’t intentional, and allows the driver of Car ‘A’ to continue on his way with no punishment.

Hey, it was just an accident right?

Bonkers.

Like Finucane said in 22 as his defence- and it's still true.

“Every week players from other sides, myself included, have a number of lacerations and bruises as a result of accidental head collisions,”

I didn't think Finucane should be suspended either.

Let's be certain. The NRL will probably now implement some new rule against it that will see one of our guys miss 3 weeks for the exact same infringement, all the while our most important player sits on the sidelines.

By line of attack, do they mean the defenders access to the ball runner? Cuz may had a pretty clear line of attack.
Also, the fact that everyone has gone on about this being an 'accident' would point to may having displayed a complete lack of control at the point of impact. If he was in control, it would mean hurting Walsh was the intent, wouldn't it?
Or at least by running up and just standing in walshs way it shows no intent to tackle, and may was just going to let the collision run its course, kinda shows there was no control at the point of impact.

I would say control was of his body, Finucane launches at him he just doesn't stand there and head clash. Dale's certainly looks more out of control- which I assume Lindner and Dallas are talking about.

In retrospect this is interesting.

At least Finnucane is trying to wrap his arms around him.

think all foul play are accidents for the most part, but if you go in that hard and get it wrong you should sit imo
This right here, he come flying out of the line with one player in his sights, he didn’t get there in time and didn’t even try and tackle him. We now have a top 3 player in the league out for at least a month and is going to greatly effect our laser position.

Nrl did fucking nothing to make teams think twice about doing it. I mean **** sake, if he just got down to make a tackle there is nothing wrong with this situation but he doesn’t.

We want our players pressuring the opponents spine players and hopefully smash them right? We don’t just want them to run slowly up and watch them pass… have to expect it back.

for sure and if they get it wrong like this they should sit too,an accident is no excuse accidents like these happen because there is a degree of carelessness imo

there is not a single chance in hell anyone here would be saying nah our hypothetical player should be charged...

I want them to get low and tackle them, not jump into a players head…

why im sure plenty agreed with carrigans accidental hip drop when they decided to crack down on that why would this be hypothetically different?
