PRE-GAME [Round 4, 2025] Broncos vs Dolphins

Payne v Saifiti is a good watch.

Payne is playing smarter than ever before, that try he scored against the Cowboys- Cotter had made three tackles in a row and Payne sees it.

He could have kept going and got at Dearden but he comes back inside where McLean, Robson and Cotter have never got back or worked from marker and runs a very Tallis line back at the markers and A defender.

He's looking up and making choices instead of just running.
Saifiti is Temu Haas.

I love Melbourne’s view on doing a Q Cup apprenticeship before first grade. I think a lot of our young guys had a stunted development from being brought through too soon.

It’s a big part of why their footy IQ has seemed so low.

I know Mariner is at about 20 games already but I would have an almost bare minimum target for all young players - something like 27 minimum.

Then in 5 years time when they are the established playing group and becoming leaders you can start putting it on the wall as a point of pride like Melbourne do. So the next generation don’t feel like it’s below them.

They say Madge has about 2 years with a playing group before he burns them out, if he does eventually get to that point with the first grade team - I think he’d be great managing our emerging talent. Imagine the standards and grit he would set for young players, then just when they get sick of him they move on to first grade and he gets to torture the next crop
I was looking at Howarth's the other day and his 42 games were:
2021... an initial taste like 4 or 5 games... potentially that post Meninga style exposure
2022/23 looked like basically full seasons
2024 9 games... so he's hit first grade right around origin time

I reckon 2 full seasons of cup is probably the sweet spot... first season you're getting a taste of playing week to week and against men... by the second season you'd be wanting them to stand out in that competition.

Even bringing Howarth in around midseason is a good choice... Not putting the pressure of a full 20+ NRL season on them, comes in around origin time so media focus is elsewhere, etc.

When you bring a young guy into grade as the starter you don't want to be dropping them back to cup a month later, so they need to be ready to go and first grade standard.

I think that's around the timing that we are looking at with BTK. He's at 36 qcup games and entering his 4th season of it (4, 20, 10 (injury), 2) so he's right in that same spot as Howarth.

There was Storm v Rabbits game in 2021 where 10 of the Storm players had played 38 or more Cup games.

The three Queensland teams had 10 combined that weekend. Broncos had one.

With the back line we have, we don't lose much with Mariner out.

I think Gem can be another Jack Reed. His attack has been a bit non-existent but I think he'll grow into that and we'll see him improve as the season goes on.
Wayne Bennett historically always put a low thrills, reliable and affordable guy at left centre and an attacking weapon on the right.

The logic being that attack naturally flows right to left and you won’t struggle to score points down that side. It’s harder to find points on the right, so keep your attacking weapon on that side for balance.

Looks like Madge is running with a similar philosophy. Given the Anderson rumours, he may be looking to find that guy long term. Which means Cobbo, Mariner and Arthars might be left fighting it out for the wing spots

So in the head to head stakes (mmm steak):

1. Walsh - Broncos (this says kind of how bad Hammer is also going that Walsh in his current state beats him out)
2. Cobbo - Broncos
3. Staggs - Broncos
4. Farnworth - Dolphins
5. Isaako - Dolphins
6. Hunt - Broncos
7. Reynolds - Broncos
8. Carrigan - Broncos
9. Marshall-King - Dolphins
10. Haas - Broncos
11. Finefeuiaki - Dolphins
12. Plath - Dolphins
13. Gilbert - Dolphins

14. Walters - Broncos
15. Willison - Broncos
16. Nicholls - Dolphins
17. Stone - Dolphins

9-8 Broncos, it will likely be closer than the form guide suggests unless we wake up from the start which we haven't done so far at all this season. Fortunately, The fade pretty quickly and we have been coming home pretty strong so if we can keep it close early, we should run away with it in the end.

We should destory these guys. When the Dolphins eventually get kicked out of the comp, they'll be talking about this game as the catalyst that started it all.

Dolphins have some strike in their backs, so we'll need to be switch on at the edges (especially for someone long range tries), but we've got them covered everywhere else. Hass 2.0 needs to be running through Nikorima on every play.

Very harsh on Arthars given that Isaako is back to being Isucko

By numbers it's close, but we have basically all the key spine positions, and by a long way in the Halves.

We also have the significantly better engine room.

We also have pretty comfortably more points in our backline when everything else is equal.

If you hold all those things, you really should be getting the job done. In particular the spine and the starting pack advantages.

You have shown major disrespect to Jensen and Piakura here.
