PRE-GAME [Round 4, 2025] Broncos vs Dolphins

- Come up against big boys every week, so can't shy away from it (tackling Te Kura)
- Yeah it was an intense session but this is the way we do it, can't dwell on one win, just need to keep getting better
- Yeah obviously we don't want to lose any derby game, The will be no slouches
- We need to work on the start of our games
- Having Toes back at there will help us go to another level
- Deine is a good character and he will go back and work on his game and he'll be back
- Running is a priority but that only comes from good defense and so I pride myself on my defense and so the last few weeks the defense has been good but we've defended a lot and so it makes it hard to run on the back of that but hopefully will see it more this week
- I haven't spoken anything about the contract, just taking it one week at a time
- Have had some pretty good milestones here on and off the field, so Brissy is home for me
- I certainly want to stay here but we will work it out down the track, its up to my manager
- There are two sides here, the first grade side and the mustangs and so if you are in the mustangs, you want to keep pushing to make the first grade side
- Its a The home game but we think of it as our ground
- They are going to be up for it and we are ready to go

I feel sorry about that guy I met at Roma Street Station he used to a broncos supporter then he went to the dark side aka being a dolphins supporter I asked him why because the Broncos were losing their matches mind you this was 2023.

Get well soon, Deine. Looking forward to your return.
I think Deine should look at where Jesse was in 2023.

He came back from warriors, but he was next man up across all 4 positions in the backline... there ended up being injuries and various things throughout that year and Jesse played 20 games, including starter for the grand final.

By the time 2024 came around he had locked down that starting spot.

That's Deine's position now, and he is more than capable of playing centre or wing... so if anyone in the back 5 goes down he's straight back into first grade... that includes Walsh, because Cobbo would be the one moving to fullback.

Deine's versatility differs to that offered by Shibasaki... Shiba can only play centre, therefore if he were to drop out of the team now and Deine into left centre, then any injuries across the backline would more than likely mean shuffling players around to bring Shiba back into a centre spot. That's not really ideal for Deine, especially considering that he would be learning how to play left centre at the same time and against the top players in NRL.

Going back to Qcup now I'd hope that he plays left centre... that's likely the spot he's being lined up for moving forward, so have him getting reps there at the lower grade to learn his craft, but if a spot opens up then he comes straight back into first grade anyway.

Wynnum don’t play this week.

He scored 17 tries last season. By way of comparison, Herbie Farnworth scored 8. As did Kotoni.

I respect Madge holding firm on his preseason decision. To do anything less would be to demonstrate a lack of conviction.

When you pick a player to set standards rather than on potential, every game is a risk of looking stupid. The first 3 games were a bit of a freebie to Madge given Staggs was injured - this one will see a lot of pressure on Shiba to justify the decision.

If all goes to plan, we continue to have gutsy wins with Shibasaki at centre and Mariner earns his way in.

Goose has been a bit less convincing and we’ve already seen Madge giving a little there with Piakura increasing his minutes

Sets standard for the club.
You work hard you get rewarded.
The Guys in the top squad, the reserves and future buys of the club can see what Madge is about now.

Pretty befuddled by Shiba sticking around.
Everyone said his D was why he is there and I haven’t been wrapped with that.
The effort in round one on Dom Young’s try was abominable.
I don’t think its hyperbolic to say that Payne has more pace than him which is crazy work for a centre.
I have been impressed with one thing, which is his tough stuff out of our end.
Does that outweigh Mariners strike?
I guess Madge sees it that way.

And only 3 of those came from his 8 games at centre ... Shiba has scored more tries than him this year... so what of it
The object of the game is to score more points than the opposition. Mariner seems to have a knack of finding the line. It's all very well to talk about metres and other stats, but you can't beat a prolific tryscorer.

Yeah, I get that. But I still expect Mariner to be back soon. The kid is a freak.

He's a prolific try scorer from the wing not centre.

Wing: 17 Games - 19 Tries
Centre: 13 Games - 3 Tries

I was going to respond that he is one our few backs who can handle the tough stuff out of our end but you came to that realisation independently.

I don’t think Madge has ever given an explicit reason - others just assumed defence. Though Mariner and Cobbo had a few moments where their defence was clown like.

That’s one way to look at it, but if you note the correlation between defensive feats and making grand finals - one could argue that the object of the game is actually to concede less points than the opposition

If Shiba can stop his bad timing with defensive rushing he has been basically perfect for what a player like him can provide.

We should note as well, since the season has started we haven't picked up a single injury yet, sure it's still only going into Round 4 but you can see it's already making some headaches on players who could certainly play atm but can't because there is a clean bill of health atm.

I don't count Staggs because that happened in the pre season.
Oh you ****. Delete this now. I swear to god who even thinks to write this.

If Mariner was our only strike weapon he's there everyday.
The tough stuff is where we need the numbers specially with Walsh at the back because he's not the Edwards/Tedesco type but he adds the strike when he's on. No point having strike players if we can't get out of our own end.

If anything the choice should be between Arthars and Mariner for the balance of the team and Jesse has it over Mariner at this stage.

I look at Shiba and I can see potential for him as a back rower.. he has the size, can run a good line and defends reasonably well.
We have pretty good depth in the back line but are pretty short on with back rower depth.
Not sure if he could handle the physicality of the back row but you never know, probably wouldn't be worse than Hunt or Jetski..
Hopefully Baker is getting fired into the sun after this year..
