POST GAME [Round 5, 2024] Broncos vs Storm

I only saw glimpses of bits and pieces. Looks like just missed a few opportunities. What’s the go with Reyno? Bad?
Was one of those games where Brisbane kept scoring against the run of play, Melbourne would inevitably run them down only for the game to turn again. Melbourne always felt like they were on top, but Brisbane would pull a rabbit out and it looked like they were going to fluke a win. Then they had the two bombed tries and Melbourne just made them pay easily.

They never stopped trying Brisbane and did better than they had any right to but when the game was there they faultered.

Club is downplaying the Reyno situation but don't be surprised if it's a long term injury.

Our team is very sharp in attack when given even a sniff, but it's clear the outs are hurting us right now.

Just once! One time! Could we please lose without shitty reffing? Could we not just have these dodgy calls? Like Carrigan's offload that was challenged and the Bunker rules it lost and doesn't even consider that he passes it back out the back of the hands. The controversial grounding. The strip where the Bunker is looking at Munster's hand first, when it is patently clear Blore is stripping the ball! Seriously! Just give us a fair and decent game to lose. Especially when it is only lost by 2 points in the end. I said it in the match thread that Melbourne at home under Klein is a 12 point handicap, and I stand by that..
We also blew two tries though and their last 2 tries were lame. I’m more angry about baker letting in that try.

We needed to give Cobbo more early ball to get him one on one with Meaney. The few times we did, he was doing some damage to the Melbourne defensive line. Likewise, we needed to give a fresh Oates some good ball close to the line, but we kept playing away from him. We just seemed so directionless without Reynolds.

We need to have a few attacking plays up our sleeve that we can fall back on and execute even without our top players, rather than relying purely on ad-lib footy and individual brilliance all the time.

it is frustrating to see so many plays completely break down because no one knows what to do. We constantly waste opportunities in good field position because everything gets clunky and we end up taking a settler.

There's enough speed and skill to score points, but they need to improve their ability to construct tries. Often they're relying on individual brilliance or spectacular plays to get it done, but when the game is on the line inside the redzone they look haphazard.

That can always be improved, it's the defence I'm more concerned about. With very few exceptions, the Broncos rarely rattled the Storm and just couldn't get the Storm to ground when they needed to. As bad as Baker's effort was, it was tackle three and the team was well and truly on the back-foot, what happened in the previous three tackles?

Yeah when on the line our attack is dulled, it's very much counter attack with the individual brilliance that helps us far from the line especially with Walsh out.

Our defence on the other hand isn't good, we miss Haas.

Irrespective of what the scans reveal for Adam, he should rest up and get it healed completely as long as it takes him. He shouldn't be rushed & i reckon our coaching team would plan astutely.

It may be impossible for Adam to not think that this the year he must win a Premiership and do whatever it takes him to get that. He sure does have a contract for next year but he would be under lot of pressure before running out every single game next year. So, the coaching team should make sure that he’s healed up completely.

I agree and it should happen early. Walsh can barely sit still he is so keen to be back playing, so let him. His freakishness is better than nothing in trying to make up for the loss of Reyno's leadership and organization. Yes Madden is a passenger and we are gonna have to deal with that. Our only choice right now to stay in the premiership race is to outscore our opponents so they really have to pull one out of their ass in order to beat us. That is basically what Melbourne just did.

Did anyone see an angle of Coates getting the ball down? Not saying he didn't get it down, but I couldn't see an angle that showed it. It just looked like he kept struggling till the end as if he had been held up and failed to get the ball down.

The thing about that try is that Coates fly kicks Mariner. It's reckless and dangerous, and should have been a penalty to Brisbane.

Didn’t think Te Kura was ready but wow he proved me wrong. Was brilliant in attack and defence and didn’t look tired once.

If Fletcher Baker plays for the broncos again I’m throwing my membership away. Release him instantly. What a pussy effort. 3 runs for 19m in 35 mins🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

It does seem a bit ridiculous that he’s allowed to essentially kick Mariner out of the contest, but we can’t touch him whilst he’s in the air. It makes it virtually impossible to defend besides holding him up at the last second, which the boys almost did.

Yeah so in the situation before where Willison and Te Kura are coming through and looking very promising, where does Kobe fit?

14. Smoothy / Mozer (need a back up hooker)
15. Willison
16. Te Kura
17. Forward utility (Oates, Hunt, Kobe, etc.) - Kobe potentially last here, because what positions is he covering??

If Kobe wants to guarantee his spot on the bench he needs to expand his game... he's a mobile small forward that cuts blokes in half, but he hasn't showed ball playing, an ability to play hooker or an ability to play in the second row or outside backs.

He's basically Jazz or Erin Clarke... who are currently struggling to make the 17 each week... compared to Dylan Walker (ball plays and covers outside backs), Peachey, Connor Watson, Dylan Lucas, etc. You want to be that utility forward on the bench you need to be covering another position for injuries whilst also having a purpose when there are no injuries.

At the moment he's got a purpose when there's no injuries, but he's not exactly helping when an injury does occur... so he needs to be looking over his shoulder because X and BTK are coming.

I’m a big fan of the way Hetherington plays. He’s an absolute throw back and does all the %ers but I tend to agree. I’m disappointed his game hasn’t really evolved at all in the last year or so. If anything his impact has gone backwards.

Could very well end up the odd man out
