Round 5 - Broncos vs Dragons - Post Match Discussion

I really, really love Griffin. Not only the way that he coaches the team and has them playing, but they way he speaks to the media. Case in point, re Gillett:

“He's going alright – I thought he was probably trying to do too much there early, hence that shoulder charge,” Broncos coach Anthony Griffin said. “That might knock him back into shape. He just loves contact, as you've seen in the last few weeks.
"He's chock full of confidence at the moment. I don't want to ever discourage him from doing that. You'd have to look at the replay but the feeling I got from the first 15 minutes was he was looking . . . for the big hit rather than the team play defensively.
“I'm not cross at him, I'm just saying he's got to pick his time.”
Sitting in an icebath in the Brisbane dressing rooms, Gillett told the Herald: “I remember [the Weyman incident]. I've just got to ease up a bit. The coach keeps telling me to to ease up . . . just shooting out of the line, I've got to be a bit smarter and take it easier.

Very honest, but in no way brutal about it. Gives us a lot of info but no drama or scandal - couldn't ask for more from a head coach. Gillett obviously has a lot of respect for the guy in the way he talks as well.

That was my biggest gripe with Gillett last night. He looked like he was trying too hard. Flying off the line trying to make a big hit every tackle. It wasn't his best game but it wasn't his worst either.

Indeed, and as schmix said, Griffin has immediately addressed it and both he and gillett know where the issues lie...and it's not a major thing. It's not like Griffin's read him the riot act and said "stop going for the big hit" but rather think a bit more carefully.

Agree with schmix, full credit to Griffin, very good coaching. It'd be easier to just say "don't do it, stick to the game plan" but clearly he doesn't want to stifle individual brilliance. Reminds me of another coach...

Arent we lucky Wallace has been pretty good at converting points aswell, lastnights game could have been a different story had Wallace been below average with his place kicks, kudos to him for taking over that role and doing a consistant job of it.

Hope the Broncos take another look at their 2nd half defence with their tackling, I see alot of wrapping up the ball (te'o/McGuire does alot of this) but doesnt in anyway stop the opponent from gaining metres in the collision

All in all happy with the win and hope the boys are up for it again next week, GO BRONCOS!

Yep, I can't give enough praise to Hook. He's fantastic.

Was thrown in the deep end at the beginning of last season after Ivan Hensacked departed, with an extremely young squad, yet managed to take us all the way to the preliminary finals. Plus, I'm certain we would've gone further if not for unfortunate circumstances.

Now this year, after the retirement of the greatest player the game has seen, he's got us playing some really smart footy. His tactical nous should not be underestimated. The bloke is something special IMO, hopefully he'll still be coaching us in 10 years' time.

As for Gillett, he wasn't dominant, but some of the things that he did tonight were just classy. First he trails Beale's kick in the final 10mins to put us 12 in front and then he made that tackle on Young in the final few minutes to stop what would have been a very close finish. His instinct to be in the right place at the right time is just epic!

As for Teo, I think tonight he showed why everyone thinks him to be so expendable.

Yes, and I also seem to remember what, 3 try saving tackles as well, and a number of good hits including one on Weyman. Yes, he tried too hard, but that first half was an almost perfect game of football. Once the bench rotation really kicked in, our performance seemed to drop, until the starting 13 resumed again.

Agree about T'eo.

When Parker returns, I see Gillett back to the bench, and sooner than later, to another club.

Go wash your mouth with soap! :shake:

Unlikely Matt would want to play anywhere else. He loves Brisbane and couldnt imagine living anywhere else.

I thought it was just a dumb thing to say. Why would he leave? If he is playing that good he will push glen onto the bench. He gets 60 mins a game at the moment that is plenty.

This.

Why is there this feeling that because you're on the bench you're not going to play as well? We can't fit 17 players into the starting 13.

Hasn't Gillett already said he wants to be a bronco for life? With someone of his talent wanting to stay, we will do everything in our power to help him do that.

another guy that is now playing GAYFL for the Suns said that once ... what was his name again? :cheesy:

I think Gillett made it very clear in pre-match interviews he wants to be in the run-on side. Obviously it matters a lot to him. That's why I said we had better be careful.

My answer to benching him is simple. He is more effective in the first 20 minutes, and see no reason why he can't play 80. Just look at how the team played with him in the run-on side: an almost perfect half of footie. My memory of the game is that while Gillett was on he made 2 or 3 try saving tackles and a lot of good hits. Even Thaiday acknowledged his defence on the NRL website.

As Ari posted earlier, it's Gillett's reading of the play, especially in cover defence, and his support play that is special.

I also still reckon he needs to be used more as a wide running forward in structured plays, and I'd rather Gillett running and defending wide than Parker any day. Parker's excellent work in the middle is where the focus should be - the metres he makes and his off loads - up the middle.

For mine, when he come back, I'd bench Parker ahead of Glenn with T'eo dropping out.

Lol bench Parker. Seriously could you be any dumber?? Gillett won't be going anyway so stop speaking ****. If him starting is best for the team he will start.

I think the main difference in our first and second half performances was McCullough. I love Benny Hunt but last night Macca was clearly the better hooker (unlike the first 4 rounds I might add) and we seemed to lose our cohesion. Having said that, there's no way I'd send the Broncos to a game with one hooker - Macca is a bit unreliable for that IMO.

24-0 is a nervous scoreline. It's far enough in front to let a bit of complacency creep in, but not far enough away to mount a comeback. Particularly when the Dragons decided to throw it around a bit in desperation.

I tend to agree Jeb but think having Civo and Hannant benched hurt our ability to dominate up front and struggled to get out of our own half to mount attacks particularly with no Parker available meant we needed Mcguire and Anderson(and lets be honest, Anderson has done squat at the Broncos, he made 10 metres last night FFS) which is why Parker is vital over an 80 minute period, his not a bench player and ensures we can make metres even when the likes of Hannant and Civo are benched. When they did come back on we looked a hell of lot better and thats no surprise.

Does anyone know how long we are stuck with Anderson btw?

I think it is true that starting is important to Gillett. And frankly, I think my husband to be should be playing 80minutes. His ability to read plays in attack and defense is seriously a game changer. He trailed Beale's kick last night, he was following behind that bomb to score against Souths. And not to mention all the try saving tackles he can make just by reading plays. For me, you start him over Glenn and keep Parker starting.
