NRLW POST GAME [Round 8, 2024] Broncos vs Sharks

Probably depends on if the warriors are coming into the comp

Warriors are one of the new teams coming in next year, but she still has a two years left on her deal with NZ Rugby and there’s a 7’s World Cup coming up in ‘26.

I think we could keep her for next year but I don’t think she’ll stay beyond that. It probably depends on when the tournament is and whether it will overlap with the NRLW season. Not sure when it is as I’m too lazy to look it up lol.

World 7s starts up again end of November ‘24 and March ‘25 is the last date announced so far with more to come

There’s also a standard women’s union World Cup next year that she may be interested in now she’s played some ‘full team’ games.

I think we’ve got a decent shot to retain her, at least for one more season - while no doubt she’d love to stay in NZ for a bit, she’s also used to travelling and has fit right in here with the girls.

Might hinge on Gayle and Mele and what they’re doing.

And for them a premiership could still go either way - either they ride into the sunset after a ‘job done’, or they stay for the chance at more success. I think they may both stay for another year, wait for the Warriors to get going, and then look to finish their careers at home

For Waaka, Mele and Broughton do we know if NZ is still home for them? Or are they settled here now?

On Waaka she was saying in an interview how much she loves it at the Broncos and whenever she sees Broncos merch she can’t help herself she needs to buy it. Probably just nice words but I hope it means we may be able to keep her.

I forgot about that world cup. I think she will be. She played in the previous two world cups ('17, '21).

I found this article from 11 days ago.

It's not very encouraging for any plans to have her in the side next year. But after that, she could come back.

"I'm loving league," she exclaimed. "I'm not going to put a stop to it and say 'this is the end for me' because I feel like it's just the beginning.

"If another opportunity comes after the next two years, I will probably jump at it. But I'm just taking it year by year at the moment and seeing how this body goes."

Theoretically, Waaka could still feature in both the NRLW, which runs for a maximum of 10 weeks from the end of July through until early October, and the sevens World Series, which starts in December and ends in June.

However, NZR's current stance likely won't allow their contracted players to alternate between the two codes.

That doesn't mean Waaka won't attempt to persuade her employers otherwise.

"At the moment, it is a bit scratched out for next year," she conceded. "But with the news of a shortened season for the World Series next year, I probably will push my luck and push the boundaries and ask if I can come back and play.

"I understand the whole situation, but I would love to play both.

"The seasons don't clash. They're complete different months of the year and if I'm able to play league, then go to sevens, then come back to league - hey, I'll be winning."

Still nothing concrete about Stacey

Don’t know what the delay is in getting scans/proper diagnosis or if they’re being cagey for whatever reason. But they’re talking rehab so she’ll be out for the rest of the season you’d think unless we make the GF

Yeah the fact they're talking about meeting a specialist and mapping out a rehab plan I think is confirmation it's a fracture.

Absolutely fucked. She deserves to be playing finals.

Did anyone actually see the tackle it happened in? Was there anything dodgy from the Sharks players or just standard contact? I have rewatched the game a few times and still can’t pinpoint it.

Just contact I think after this break at about 4:30 into the video

Yeah she first got the injury when she made that break down the sideline and was tackled when she passed it in, the backrower for the Sharks just landed on her leg awkwardly. The trainers were trying to take her off but she refused.

Moments later when Shenae almost got through from the scrum, Waaka just dropped to the ground. She didn’t argue with the trainers then.
