ANTHONY Seibold sought the counsel of perhaps the greatest Bronco ever before he rubber stamped teenager Tom Dearden for his NRL debut tomorrow night.
Seibold spoke to his assistant coaching team of Peter Gentle, Kurt Richards and Ben Cross, as well as Broncos’ captain Darius Boyd.
He also engaged the great Darren Lockyer, who himself made an NRL debut at nearly the same age back in the 1990s.
All were adamant the former Australian Schoolboys half was ready to start the match against the Rabbitohs.
“It’s a great occasion for him to make his debut as an 18-year-old kid,” said Seibold this morning.
“I have chosen him because he is ready to play.
“Not only did I think deeply about it, I consulted Darren Lockyer, my three assistant coaches and Darius Boyd as well.
“To a person it was unanimous it was a good decision to play Tom.
“It is a big challenge against a really quality side, but we think he is up to it.
“I don’t seek counsel from too many people.
“But I sought counsel from Darren Lockyer because he is a really smart person not only in that position, but in and around football.
“I have really three good assistant coaches and I asked Darius our captain.
“They are the blokes I spoke to and including myself, who has the major say, it was unanimous.
“There are a lot of crappy things about coaching but one of the really pleasing things is giving a young man an opportunity to make his debut.
“For Tom and his family it is a special occasion.
“And we think Tom is the right player for tomorrow night.”
