Secret weapon set to ignite Broncos

why is it ridiculous??
i didnt claim he didnt need help, can you tell me how many staff wayne has around him now excluding this guy?
why did alf need it?
if the players have mental issues i have no dramas them seeing a psych professionally.
next off the rank will be the hari krishners in the sheds at half time giving a rousing speech

I explained why I think what you said is ridiculous; a coach can't fill every role. The Broncos have a chappy too and Bill has done it for nearly 20 years. Is he needed every day- no of course not but he's helped players immeasurably over the years and stuck his head in to have a chat with players that he may help.

call me a sceptic or a non believer, but fairdinkum!!
these lads are professional's, if they need someone in their ear oustide of the coach, staff or family to play their best then they should take a pay cut.
next we will have a dream catcher and voodoo doctor in the sheds speading fairy dust and telling our boys to run hard and tackle hard.

As someone who has played sport at a high level, I can testify to the necessity of being in the right head space

Once you have the physical skills in your kit, high level performance is based on 20% physical and 80% mental

And how many times do you hear highly regarded sports coaches/commentators/analysts talk about the difference between average form and top form is just a bit of confidence?

The positive effect of sports psychology isn't even debated anymore, it's just a given

I'm surprised by this comment Talanoa, but to each their own

My opinion is that any attempt to get the best out of our players can only be seen as a good thing

Hey if it gets the players to play with confidence and at the top of their game then who cares how it's done?

As long as they aren't taking performance enhancing drugs, it's not an issue.

You are a sceptic and/or non-believer.

Guaranteed most top athletes in the world have sports psych's to help them out. Why? Because when you're an elite athlete, there's not much separating the physical attributes but there is a huge gulf separating the mental attributes between the best and the rest.

one of the big ones is focus on the process, and the result will work itself out - I'm sure you can see how this would be beneficial in a clutch situation? rather than thinking of this moment and what it means, just focus on robotically doing what you need to do.

Mmmm, that's creating a strawman to knock down. Better you state why an extremely well proven coaching aid draws such derision from you. Are you of the opinion that the coaching staff and family are better qualified than someone who specialises ? Whether someone earns their living from sport or not simply being professional does not suddenly bestow special skills on that person. We all can use a little help but equating sports psychology with voodoo and magic is plainly stupid.

I remember hearing Sir Alex Ferguson sent his players to a top sports psychologist in America. They came back and dominated the Premier League and Ferguson said that visit was a big reason why because the players just played with so much confidence and didn't hold back at all.

I literally cannot think of a professionally run sports club in any code, that doesn't employ a sports psychologist

Having a professionally trained person come in and make the players feel good about themselves is a good thing.

If tallis didnt like him, id considered it a recommendation. I think tallis wouldnt find him very useful, because he needs a pychiatrist not a phycologist. The bloke lets a 20 year grudge with bennet cloud his every opinión.

Tallis' opinion was simply that for a rugby league player, if you rip in hard in training and hard on the playing pitch and give it your all, why do you need someone to boost your confidence?

Just rip in and get it done...

Some people to be fair don't need help psychologically, they are quite sound. Those guys are few and far between though.

Anyone else feel sorry for psychology students? It's not going to help them make burgers.

That was fine for Tallis but what if a player has done exactly that and it still hasn't produced the desired result ? Sure you may conclude that the player isn't up to the task but sometimes that's not the reason. Almost every person on the planet holds at least one belief about themselves that simply isn't true. Most have more. Freeing oneself of false belief can lead to great changes, a process I experienced once many years ago. I practised hard, tried my hardest yet something limited my results. Something I believed. When it was excised I went from a low ranking to the very top. The sports irrelevant. The right advice can release great achievement.

You know nothing

Maybe coming from a bruting, bustling forward who doesn't need to use their head. What the **** would he know anyway!? His greatest moment was picking a dude up and dragging him for 10m over the sideline by the scruff of his neck.

Even though I've lost some respect for Tallis with his juvenile problem with WB I will always love what he gave my team. He has become a knob but he was fantastic when he was our guy. We used to have quite a few intimidating blokes in our ranks and Gordo was one of our best but his opinions are nowadays media soundbites. I would still like to have a thousand beers with him one day and night.
