He has a great grubber when it's a set play. When he is forced into kicking as a second option, he takes too long to make the decision and ends up with a thousand legs in front of him.

I agree with that... but that isn't hard to tune. He can kick well, it's just his execution sometimes that stuffs him as you said when he isn't deciding to kick as first option.

He's a runner. He just needs to know when to pull out of the run and go for a repeat set. I think that'll be better this year with more confidence.

Jason D might get that fixed in him.

Oates isn't great on the air ... we are better off putting it through the hands and allowing Oates to use his strength and agility to finish them off

The actual kicking isn't his problem, it's his decision making and game management. Deciding when and where to kick, and being able to change his kick selection on the fly, is his weakness.

That's right.. you're a better chance of scoring with a backline of Boyd Milford Hunt Oates Roberts and Kahu if you run it on the last. Even getting tackled on the 5th is better than trying for a grubber and giving away 7 tackles

Rubbish. Mullen has spent most of each of the last few seasons out and I''m sure even you can't argue Hunt hasn't been rugged and reliable in availability to play..

or you could just not kick it dead? other teams manage to do it pretty well. building pressure and wearing the defensive line out is a much better solution than getting tackled 5m's out and turning over the ball.

Oh i agree. But sometimes kicking on the last means you have a staggered defensive line.. getting tackled on the last nullifies the backs and limits their chance to exploit gaps. Our defense can start the new set in line as a group, and therefore have tougher line speed and apply pressure by keeping opposition in our zone.

it also means you don't get a chance to build pressure because you're not forcing repeat sets. it's one of those risk v reward scenarios, but, we're erring on the side of caution when attacking a try line? seems kinda odd don't you think?

Attacking the try line hasn't been one of our problems. We have a pretty good conversion rate when in the 20m zone.

True but you only need to build pressure if you can't score. And what we are currently doing is working really well given our conversion rate.

Unless you would prefer us to attempt to force a line drop out instead of going for the try.

Sometimes i would, mainly because going for the try ends up being tackled 5m's out and ends up being a nothing play - we've seen it this year many times.

now, the theory behind it is sound, if we don't score we'll give the ball back 5m out from their own line. i understand that, set defensive line, hard rucks off their own line - gotcha.

however, i would rather us build pressure and not go for the try (unless it's clearly on) and wear down the opponent. not only do we suck the juice out of them, we demoralize them because they're constantly defending their own line and making tackles.

There was a storm game i was watching earlier this year, wish i could remember who against, anyway in the last 10mins the opposition was absolutely flying home, had all the momentum looked like they were going to snatch it - cronk and smith just rolled the ball into the in goal each time, kept getting repeat sets and just completely sucked the life out of the game, it was brilliant to watch and must've been so disheartening for the other team. That's what I'd like to see (i know it's smith and cronk but they're not the only two, past/present/future to have a controlled short kicking game), smarter game management and kicking management in situations like these instead of going for the off-the-cuff individual brilliance. that has its place, but not every set you know (a little hyperbole but you know what i'm getting at)?

It's a good question - but shouldnt that be upto the halves to discuss and organise? I would suggest this also comes under game management, who does what in what situation? This one isn't entirely on Hunt I agree, but he should shoulder 50% of the blame.

You won't find me ignoring Milf's faults though, I think my first post said he needs a kick up the arse too for his last game alone.

He is shouldering 100% of the blame ... Milford seems to get a free ride when it comes to our kicking issues

he's shouldering most of the kicking blame because he does most of the kicking. if he didn't, he wouldn't. if milf is a good kicker, he needs to kick more, he either needs to be directed to or he needs to step up and take responsibility. same with macca. infact macca should really be kicking a lot more outta dh, he strikes the ball very cleanly.
