Stagg Returns to Brisbane Broncos

Experienced utility David Stagg is heading home to play out his career with the Brisbane Broncos where he made his NRL debut a decade ago.
Stagg's return to the club comes three days after Brisbane's surprise signing of another former Bronco, Gold Coast halfback Scott Prince, to a two-year deal on Wednesday.

I've been saying for a while I'd like him back. Excellent utility/depth player for what would be a bargain bin contract. He has experience, would be great around the origin period and he's all heart and effort, the kind of player who the club can benefit form having.

He's only 29, he has a good 2 years in him.

"My family are all in Brisbane so to get an opportunity to play for a club like the Brisbane Broncos again, I am over the moon," Stagg told AAP.

"Brisbane have given me an opportunity to keep playing in the NRL and I couldn't be happier."

With strike forward Ben Te'o heading to South Sydney in 2013 there is an opening for Stagg to be part of Broncos coach Anthony Griffin's backrow rotation with his high work rate and utility value.

"That's exactly what the coach said to me and I am looking forward to the challenge," Stagg said.

"Going to the Bulldogs was one of the best decisions I made and I played some really good footy."

Stagg's two-year deal gives him a chance to bring up two major milestones with the club where his career started in 2003.

Sounds like we'll definitely be using him as a regular first grader, rather than plucking him out of the Queensland Cup occasionally, as a few had speculated.

Why not? He'd be paid close to the minimum and he's a proven first grader who is a handy depth player. I can't see him making the first squad unless it's for Hunt's position and Macca plays 80. For his price he and the kind of guy he is, he offers good value to us.

As per previous post, I think it might mean Hunt is signed elsewhere/dropped and Stagg is our bench utility with Macca playing 80 minutes most weeks.

Why?

It's clear the Broncos are buying experienced players who are going to be able to look after our young guys. I don't want to be buying flashing players who only care about their own career.

Don't mind it at all. Reliable player.

And if he plays regular first grade hopefully Griffin will just throw him in the middle which will free up Gillett and Thaiday to play a little wider. Gillett in particular - need to get him out on the fringes! Massive waste of his talent this season.

i think stagg is a good signing. we lost teo. not that he's in any way a direct replacement but it should allow our more dangerous backrowers to get out wider. he will be good utility value as i think we might have found ourselves a bit thin at times this year on the bench.

Happy with this. From all reports he is a standard setter off the field. Players such as these are worth far more than their contract values and on field efforts. Additionally he replaces the hole Te'o left as a middle backrow benchie.

Attitude wise we lost our way a few times this year. Here's hoping an additional year of first grade and the continued presence of some old hard heads will go a way to correcting this.

Better Stagg than when we resigned Carlaw

Actually I thought outside his early seasons Carlaw when he was outstanding and look set to be the next big backrower for us his return for the 2006 season saw him in back in form(not great form) and while he wasn't outstanding he contributed to that side particularly his effort against the Dogs in the finals. Still I'm happy to see Stagg back to the Broncos, his definitely good enough to be on the bench and has the right attitude.
